Default US Senate panel cuts Pakistan aid over conviction

    24 May 2012 / REUTERS, WASHINGTON
A Senate panel expressed its outrage over the conviction of a Pakistani doctor who helped the US get Osama bin Laden by slashing aid by $33 million - $1 million for every year of the doctor's 33-year sentence.

The Appropriations Committee approved the amendment 30-0 on Thursday as Republicans and Democrats widely criticized Pakistan's conviction of Shakil Afridi for high treason a day earlier. Afridi ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify bin Laden's presence at the compound in the town of Abbottabad where US commandos killed the al-Qaida leader in May 2011.

The United States has called for Afridi to be released.

Great symbolic gesture.. Every single NATO country that provides aid to Pakistan should follow suit..

I completely agree. A man who rid the world of the personification of evil deserves all the recognition he could get.

The guy most likely didn't even know who he was working for or what he was working on. Surely the punishment of running a fake vaccination campaign which probably didn't harm anybody except OBL can't be 33 years, oh wait, it was tribal court. If the doc had any idea of anything which is highly unlikely he would have received American residency long before the OBL operation. As always great PR job by Pak.

He should have went to the ISI not the CIA by going to the CIA he encouraged an attack on his own country by a foreign force. If I was Prime Minister of Pakistan I would have had him hung he got off easy.

Of course the reward money probably will never come up now that they got Bin laden.
