Default Irfan Khan to play Muhammed Yunus

Irfan Khan to play Muhammed Yunus

Noted Indian actor Irrfan Khan is likely to play the role of Grameen Bank founder Dr. Muhammad Yunus in a film on the Nobel Peace Prize winner, being made by Italian director Marco Amenta, media reports here said.

The film, titled “Banker to the Poor” is based on the bestseller by the same name and portrays the life and times of Dr. Yunus.

The film will show how and why Dr. Yunus worked with the poorest of the poor shunned by other commercial banks.

It will also have Irrfan capture Yunus' dream of empowering the poor and make them stable breadwinners for their families thereby boosting the Bangladeshi economy.

Reports said a meeting between Irrfan and Dr. Yunus is also on the cards before the shooting begins.

Though mainly a Bollywood actor, Irrfan has proven his acting prowess in films like “The Namesake”, “The Warrior”, “The Mighty Heart, “Slumdog Millionaire”, “Midnight's Children”, “Charas” and “Maqbool”.

    I hope it's not another poverty p0rn.

Foreigners will readily gulp it down and reinforce the "poverty" stereotype of the subcontinent

Hope BD will do something about it like appoint a Govt 'watcher' so that the film does not involve too much of the so called 'poverty p0rn'. This movie will get a lot of awards, may be even an oscar but will bring bad PR to BD just as 'Slumdog Millionaire' in a way disgraced India in world stage.

Just giving a friendly advice, its up to BD to take final decision.

That would be a disaster. Let them make it without any hindrance. We'll just see.

I didn't watch Slumdog Millionaire, but how was it 'disgraceful' for India? There are poor people everywhere. Many movies and TV programs don't show poor people and hobos and the lives they lead. They just show all the 'pretty stuff'. That way, audiences like it.

The story of Muhammad Yunus is not the same as some kid in Slumdog Millionaire.

Considering the topic of the film, poverty will be shown because first of all, Bangladesh is a pretty poor country.

Secondly, the man did a lot to help out the poor, and inspire them to 'do' the best and hope for a better future for themselves and for their children. And when I say poor, I mean the poorest of the poor with little or no hope.

The man has shown a lot more dedication and commitment than your Awami League during the entire history of its existence. So please, Indians, do not recommend any AL propaganda into the film, because your recommendation just implies that and that would be inevitable in that case. And in fact, your recommendation contradicts with democracy and freedom of speech and expression.

In my opinion, a man who hinders freedom of speech and expression is incapable of free thought. And therefore, has little or no contribution toward to good of humanity.

So again, please, no AL propaganda in the film.

    ?!!!!

A foreigner is making the film !!!!! Doesn't that make you a little apprehensive ?!!

You should realize that at the end of the day, the world is ETHNOCENTRIC. A foreigner will have his/her prejudices

Irfan Khan is a really good actor. He is in the same mold as Om Puri and Nasiruddin Shah. Gets totally immersed in the character he is playing. Not at all like our other filmy Khans who are all showmen.

    Copying from a blog.

Let’s say I made a movie about the US where an African-American boy born in the hood, has his mother sell him to a pedophile pop icon, after which he gets molested by a priest from his church, following which he gets tied up to the back of a truck and dragged on the road by KKK clansmen. Then he is arrested and sodomized by a policeman with a rod, after which he is attacked by a gang of illegal immigrants, and then uses these life experiences to win “Beauty and The Geek”.

Even though each of these incidents have actually happened in the United States of America, I would be accused of spinning a fantastic yarn that has no grounding in reality, that has no connection to the “American experience” and my motivations would be questioned, no matter how cinematically spectacular I made my movie. At the very least, I wouldn’t be on 94% on Tomatometer and a strong Oscar favorite.

Not at all. How many films did Hollywood make about other countries? And even America itself? Including bad ones? Many. And honestly, I am indifferent to anything negative, as long as it is real and not have any political agenda or anything. Support, discussion and criticism are all welcome in the movie industry. And in fact, it is necessary.

And because the current government is led by the AL, and he specifically stated, 'Government Watcher', that is why I said so. And in case you didn't notice, your AL are leading a brutal propaganda campaign against Muhammad Yunus.

Its all because of jealousy and the result of their own incompetence, greed and corruption. The truth speaks for itself no matter how hard one tried to hide it.

Muhammad Yunus gave a big boost to the image of Bangladesh around the world, ranging from Brazil to Malaysia. Your AL didn't

You are right. Nothing disgraceful about Slumdog Millionaire. A little dramatic and unrealistic perhaps, but that is where the lines between Bollywood and Hollywood were deliberately blurred a bit. Poverty has been shown in a manner which does not disturb the delicate sensibilities of western people who were the target audience. Cant imagine that the same director also made '127 Hours'. The greatest Bengali and Indian movie I have ever seen was Pather Panchali by Satyajit Ray. Saw it many many years ago, it still gives me the shivers.

As long as the movie depicts reality there should be nothing to worry about. And if by some chance the director depicts something which is unreasonable, the audience is enough to judge it. With that said i would like to add that i really like Irfan Khan's acting, one of the better actors from bollywood.
