Finance Minister AMA Muhith said on Sunday that country's population is over 16 crore, nearly two crore more than the preliminary estimate of the Bureau of Bangladesh Statistics (BBS).

“Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies is carrying out a sample survey, which will be published in September and the final figure will come after that,” the minister told journalists at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.

The Economic Reporters' Forum organised the discussion on budget implementation and challenges.

Reporters raised the issue saying that finding the real figure of population is crucial for successful implementation of the national budget.

“The difference between enumerated figure and final figure is always between 4 and 5 percent. Some 7.5 million expatriates will also be included this time. So the final figure would stand between 16.2 and 16.5 crore,” said Muhith.

When reporters drew his attention to the issue of giving new bank licenses, the finance minister said, it is a political decision and such move will increase competition among the banks.

Replying to another query, Muhith said the Securities and Exchange Commission is working on issuing new shares into the stockmarket soon.

Problem with Bangladesh is that its population growth rate has sorta plateaued. Its been stagnant at about 1.6-1.7% for past couple of decades. And thats no good news. If the growth rate doesn't start declining 2015-2020 onwards, Bangladesh's population will double by 2050. Thats 300 million people cramped in that tiny country. And it will be atleast 2090-2100 till the net growth rate equals zero and by that time population will be well over half a billion

But that would also mean a huge workforce. Bangladesh political parties need to stop fighting over these petty issues and start work on making new urban centers, cause the current cities will crumble under the pressure, they already are.

I reckon it will work out at the end of the day, but needs good planning and governance. All of Bangladesh will be like a massive city. And hopefully global warming and rising sea level wont play spoilsport.

" India's building of fortress" such articles were published in International media not by Bangladeshis. "fortress India" was written by SCOTT CARNEY, JASON MIKLIAN, KRISTIAN HOELSCHER. New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) A BJD member in the Rajya Sabha today said a large number of people opposing South Korean steel giant Posco''s USD 12 billion steel project in Orissa were illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Many of the so called villagers/settlers don''t have any document to claim ownership of the land," Baishnab Parida said during a debate on a private member''s bill on illegal immigration.[/B]
He said the land belongs to the government but these immigrants are claiming ''pattas'' in their name.
"Even though they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh they have managed to become voters," he said, adding they are playing a major role in the local elections also.
Land acquisition for the mega steel project was suspended in June in the face of stiff opposition from agitating villagers even as the BJD government in Orissa launched ground activities for the project near Paradip.
However, the process of acquisition was resumed early last month.
Posco, which initially required 4,004 acres of land reduced it to 3,719 acres after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced that private land of Dhinkia village would be kept out of the project area.
Supporting the bill, the BJD leader said it would go a long way in checking the menace of illegal immigration.
Sharing members'' concerns, Minister of State for Home M Ramachandran accepted that illegal immigration, especially influx from Bangladesh, is a serious problem affecting the country socially and demographically.

Govt of India should construct a wall similar to the one built by Chinese to stop the mongols to prevent the tiny bangladeshis from entering India and creating nuisance here.
Anyone trying to enter should be shot at sight. The walls should have barbed wire with 440 electric volts running 24/7.
Survailance should be increased and snipers should be deployed.

Rather, India should first take back its 1/2 million citizens from Bangladesh, and then should close the fence. Problem is the common rivers. Indians will keep on coming to our shores by this route.
