Dhaka, Jul 10 (bdnews24.com) – Washington has no intention to deploy its Seventh Fleet in the Bay of Bengal, says US ambassador Dan W Mozena.

He made the remark at a meet the press programme organised by the National Press Club Tuesday while responding to a question on an Indian media report about deployment of the fleet at the sea.

"Is this a joke? How you can get an aircraft carrier to Chittagong… put wheels on it?" he expressed his surprise.

Times Now, a 24-hour Indian English news channel, ran a report on May 31 titled "US eyes Bangladesh", in which it claimed that the Americans wanted to use the (Chittagong) port to counter growing Chinese influence in the region.

"America ... wants to park its Seventh Fleet in the country (Bangladesh) ... for its strategic interests," the report had said.

The US envoy said he wanted to go back to teaching profession after his retirement from the foreign service and he would use the report as 'an example of misreporting'.

"This is a glaring example how you can use information, disinformation and misinformation and create a story."

Bangladesh on June 2 sent a rejoinder to the Indian television channel saying, "The government wishes to state in unequivocal terms that there has been no such discussion at any level between Bangladesh and the USA, including during the recent visit of the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton."

The television report had further said the Americans were increasingly worried over the string of pearls of Chinese bases across the South China Sea and their naval might spreading all across Asia – putting America behind.
