Bangladesh Prime Minister’s son joins politics
Dhaka: Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the US-based engineer son of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has formally forayed into politics and joined the ruling Awami League as a primary member.
Joy's inclusion into Awami League, that led the 1971 liberation war under the leadership of his grandfather Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, followed the extended meeting of the party in Rangpur yesterday.
Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said that he had handed over Joy's membership form to the party's Rangpur unit convener.
"Through this membership, Joy, a computer engineer now living in the United States, made his formal debut in politics," Hanif said after the meeting.
A senior Awami League leader, on condition of anonymity, said the post of joint general secretary in the central working committee of the party was lying vacant that Joy might eventually fill.
Hanif said highly-educated and qualified people like Joy should come forward in leading the nation when asked if Joy would be the joint general secretary of Awami League.
Tarique Zia, the eldest son of Hasina’s arch-rival and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia, joined the politics few years back.
Tarique, now staying in London, was elected senior vice-chairman in the party’s last council.
