Cool Bangladesh ranks 4th largest clothing exporter in world - WTO

Bangladesh ranks 4th largest clothing exporter in world

Bangladesh has been ranked as the fourth largest exporter of clothing with a 3 percent share of the global market by the world body World Trade Organization (WTO), Vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Faruque Hassan said on Wednesday.

Hassan made the remarks while speaking to the members of Overseas Correspondents of Bangladesh (OCAB at the office of BGMEA.

Hassan said the ready-made garment industry in Bangladesh, with 30 years of experience, has turned into sourcing hub in the global market and demonstrated a spectacular growth in export over the past two decades.

He said Bangladesh is the largest exporter of cotton T-shirts and second largest exporter of cotton pullover and jeans for the European Union and the second largest exporter of cotton trousers to the United States by volume.

The BGMEA vice-president said although the low cost production of clothing is still an important competitive edge for Bangladesh, the increasing competition in the global apparel market has caused manufacturers to produce quality products, increase the commitment with buyers and social responsibility in factories, which have made Bangladesh a reliable option in the global supply of clothing.

At present, there are about 5,000 garment factories in Bangladesh and over two million workers are employed in the sector, 90 percent of them are women.

Not surprised, just bringing the garment equipments from developed countries and use of cheap labor.

    BTW, what about India's position?

^^ To all the members talking about 'making a fuss here'....

Its nothing new, even i agree that....nevertheless such a news should be reported so that people can know....i am sure you all knew about low labor cost here but not that Bangladesh ranks 4th....its a good achievement for our country, so a new thread is opened....

    Cheers!!!

The main resaon behind this phenominal increase is preferential treatment given to BD exports. Both EU and US have higher allocation of textile quotas for BD being one of least developed counteries in Asia.

EU and US are resisting Pakistani demands for favorable terms for Pakistani textiles on one pretext or other.

Here are some orchestrated incedent around Bangladesh garments industry, all in bid to weaken owner financial position.

25 hurt as police clash with apparel workers
    Staff Correspondent

At least 25 people, including five policemen and a journalist, were injured and five vehicles were vandalised on Begum Rokeya Sarani at Shewrapara in the capital on Wednesday in clashes between law enforcers and apparel workers, who were rallying for a 15-point demand.

Sporadic clashes suspended traffic on the road stretch between Shewrapara and Mirpur 10 for four hours and a half. Hundreds of office-goers were in trouble.

Sources said at least 10 garment factories suspended production after the clashes and several hundred shops and businesses houses were closed.
Witnesses said the Outright Fashion Limited workers went out on demonstrations about 8:00am at the factory gate after the authorities hung a notice, announcing the closure of the factory for an indefinite period.
Workers of other factories of the Outright Group joined hands with the demonstrators and blocked Begum Rokeya Sarani to push for their 15-point demands, including end to physical and mental torture on the workers.
As the workers blocked the road, the police charged at them with truncheons, Outright Fashion Limited worker Tania Khatun said.
The workers also pelted the policemen with stones, leading sporadic clashes, in which at least 25 people, including the Kafrul police officer-in-charge, Delwar Hossain, and a journalist of Sheershanews, were injured.
The police fired teargas shells and used water cannons to control the situation.
The workers called off their demonstrations about 12:30pm after the local lawmaker Kamal Ahmed Mazumdar had assured them that a meeting with the owner would be held at 5:00pm on Wednesday.
Traffic resumed Begum Rokeya Sarani about 12:45pm.
The local lawmaker along with the state minister for labour and employment, Monnujan Sufian, instituted an eight-member committee — composed of two labour representatives and two owners and four local representatives — to settle the issues.
‘We have had a fruitful meeting with the stakeholders. The workers, however, assured us that they will join work on Saturday,’ Kamal Ahmed told New Age in the evening. ‘No further agitation will take place.’
The police said they were preparing to file a case in this connection in the evening.
Another worker, Lucky Akhtar, said the agitation began on Saturday after the Outright Fashion production manager, Badal, slapped a female worker for a fault in her work.
A large contingent of lawmen was deployed in the area to fend off any untoward incident.
