Different role. It is a heavy strike fighter. Similar to Su-34 Fullback but tandem seating instead of side-by-side. Not a multi-role fighter.

J-16 will be used to replace current SU-MKM / MK2 in PLAAF. The grey radome shows it has been equipped with new kind of radar (supposed to be AESA). With twin-seat and powerful synthetic aperture radar, J-16 will be used to counter Japan's power naval forces using its equipped air-to-sea missiles...
