Talking I hope China does this and teach them a lesson

CHINA - INDIA China builds world's highest dam, India fears water theft - Asia News

Beijing (AsiaNews / Agencies) - China has admitted that it is building a dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River. The river originates in Tibet, but then flows into India where it is called Brahmaputra and is a major water source for millions of people. Moreover, the dam will be built in the area near the border disputed between the two countries.

China outlined the project this month, in a private meeting with Indian Foreign Minister S M Krishna. The dam will be built in Zangmu at a height of 3,260 meters, in the Shannan Prefecture in Tibet and nearby four other dams will also be built in the valley between Jiacha and Sangro counties. Official sources said yesterday that the overall capacity of the dams will be "several times" more than the gigantic Three Gorges Dam. Because of its altitude, the area is often subjected to extreme weather conditions and special materials and technologies will be used, developed by the Chinese space agency. For example special cement made at the laboratories of the Xichang satellite launch Centre.

Beijing plans to draw from the Dangmu dam no less than 500 megawatts of electricity to meet the growing demand for Guangdong and Hong Kong and sell it to neighbouring countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh, Laos and Cambodia.

India is however very worried about the plan, fearing a decrease in the flow of the river water in India and the destruction of the Himalayas ecosystem. Above all the agriculture and industry of the north-eastern states of India depend heavily on the Brahmaputra river.

In addition, with this project China will directly control more than 90 thousand square meters of land the sovereignty of which is disputed between India and China, who fought a war that has never formally ended and who still station armed forces in the area. China responds that the dam will allow it to develop clean energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions resulting from coal fired power plants.

Experts say that, however, Beijing has not responded to Indian concerns over the decline of the Brahmaputra river. Indian sources have observed that even if the dam is located in Chinese territory, however, international law provides that the work should not diminish the course of the river. Similarly, Beijing has never responded to the concerns of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia over the Chinese dams on the Mekong River in Yunnan.

India appears on the brink of raising its concerns at an international level.

Brahmaputra flows through north east region where there are ample rains( which includes the place with highest rainfall in the world).
Also the river becomes wide only when entering India due to the tributaries originating from India called Dibang and Lohit.

The Brahmaputra has the greatest volume of water of all the rivers in India because of heavy annual rainfall levels in its catchment basin. At Dibrugarh the annual rainfall averages 2,800 millimeters, and at Shillong it averages 2,430 millimeters.

But its real trouble for bangladesh because they are really dependant on it for rice cultivation and all.

India has to worry little if the China builds the biggest dams as the main catchments are inside India,
Also India should actually thank China for it, for the fact that Brahmaputra is known for massive flooding and building a dam in tibet would have a control of it to some point.

China can build whatever dams they want to build and take as much water as they want from Brahmputra. we don't have any agreement on Brahmputra so they are free to build.

India will not loose anything if China builds dams on Brahmputra.I Don't think even Bangladesh will loose much.

Yes, we heavily depend on Brahmputra when it comes to north-east farming. But, when they will build dam, that doesn't mean there will not any single drop of water in river beds. there will be plenty of water. and above all, if the situation goes very critical about water shortage in India. then, we can take out as many water as we want from not only Brahmputra(and leave nothing for bangladesh) but also from river flowing to the neighbouring country through Kashmir. kyoki, Nango ka mukabala karneke liye agar sharam aaye to khud nange hona padta he. jisko jo ukhadna he ukhad le.

China is within its rights to build the dam. while India is concerned about water shortages due to the damn, we are not without means to secure it. And by that i dont mean war. i mean we can divert water from other rivers, or if necesary, make an agreement with the chinese on the water issue.

If i remember right, an article was posted on this issue before. And the chinese had said that there wouldnt be any stoppage to the flow of water.

BTW, I like the mature way in which Indian members have responded to this issue. Instead of calls to war or claims like, 'We'll strike the dams and China wont risk nuclear war' we have very systematically debated and defused the issue.

not really a matter for india to be worried about...infact as far as I know due some deforestation in assam, the high water level in Brahmaputra causes flood quite often...this happend both due to snow meting and heavy rainfall...if China build s a dam..this will in a way help assam from a lot of damag each year and will save a lot of water from gettin wasted..even if a dam is built in chinese territory, this indian region gets enough rainfall (one of the highest rainfall recieving region in the world) to met its requirement.
but I really feel chinese Govt. will not lower the down stream water flow causing a major problem to already affected Bangladesh who is facing water peoblems already.

Congrats china, for building the world's highest dam.China have every right to build that dam,And as a friendly gesture, the complete plan of dam and hydroelectric project have been shared with indian authorities.Since most of water in indian side of brahmaputra originates from indian tributaries this dam is not gonna make any notable water shortage in in india.Hoping to see more and more megastructures from the rising dragon..Best wishes.

See!! Some Indians are really over-smart not to hide their true color. Only question to neighbors is "Whether they need any enemy with such a friend ?"

i hope this chinese action will raise indian eyebrows.....for decades now yearly floods in brahmaputra has wasted crops, cattle n humans..every year brahmaputra is rising n riverbanks r submerging....but assam government, the greatest impotent in all,has been able to do nothing.....and,as usual, central govt. has given the step son treatment to the region....
anyway i believe, dams will make no water shortage in northeast(may effect bagladesh).but this dams can lead to unatural flood n landslides in the region......

While we were talking China should do it, reports came just now that 23 killed in Assam due to flooding and brahmaputra and its tributaries were flowing above the danger mark in at least eight places.

23 killed in Assam thunderstorms, flood inundates Kaziranga Park

I think the thread name should be changed to I hope China does this faster and teach how to help Indians.
