It was a good bit on how Mandarin sound versus Cantonese. You can tell he probably hangs out/grew up with a lot of Chinese friends.

Also, the Cantonese English accent and the Mandarin English accent are quite different.

There are a lot of similarities though. For example, neither Mandarin or Cantonese have the "V" sound, so "ventilation" will sound like "wentilation".

Hong Kong English is easily distinguished because there is no "R" sound in Cantonese (unlike Mandarin) so "free" will end up sounding like "fee".

For the record I think Mandarin sounds a lot nicer than Cantonese. Cantonese sounds quite "rough", like German or Japanese.

Chinese people in general have trouble with R and L sounds (Liquid consonant and Rhotic consonant in phonetic terminology)

but you seem to be right about some Mandarin dialects having R sounds. (never really took note of it)

Well, you are from the Beijing area, so you're probably more comfortable with that. South Chinese don't tend to do it as much.

It depends on your point of view I think, but personally I prefer the "sound" of Mandarin.

Cantonese is also loaded with all sorts of rough "slang" terms that don't correspond to the written form.

Well it is sort of universal, in that everyone in China will be familiar it. Standard Mandarin has relatively less Erhua I would say.

It's mostly the non-Mandarin speaking Chinese (in South China) who are less comfortable with Erhua.

I really wish they would teach Mandarin as the official language here in HK though. Hong Kongers really need to improve their Mandarin skills.

When I was in 5-6th grade, I was made fun of by my peers at school when I talked Chinese on the phone with my parents. Now everyone at my university is like "oh how awesome you can speak Chinese" and "think of the great opportunity you'll have" etc etc. It really shows that:

1. Westerners have no respect for people who are poor and less advanced than themselves.
2. Educating yourself and empowering your nation is the only to increase a country's standing in the world.
3. China has came a long way in the past 10 years. I think the last ten years have been decisive for China's emergence (thank you Bush!) as a world leading nation. I believe we're at a stage where America can no longer "contain" China

I learned English around the same age but I never took it personally when people made fun of my accent. Really you shouldn't have thought it that way, a) it doesn't help, the more you dwell on it and are sensitive about it, the more they will also. b) As kids, it's much more innocent than that. Kids at that age will make fun of anything that is different and strange.

Remember the real name for China is "ZhongGuo" aka the Middle Kingdom, China is a western name for us. Certainly "Ching Chong" doesn't remotely sound like Chinese.
