Gazprom is ready to help develop resources in Pakistan, the Kremlin said in a statement after President Dmitry Medvedev met with his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari in the Kremlin on Thursday.

Other agreements signed during the meeting include an intergovernmental agreement on air traffic, a memorandum of mutual understanding between the Russian Energy Ministry and the Pakistani Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, and a memorandum of mutual understanding between the Russian Agriculture Ministry and the Pakistani Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Russia is also looking for a role in the construction of a gas pipeline from Turkmenistan to India, via Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to the statement.

Both sides confirmed sincere interest in joint work on the CASA 100 project of electric power transmission from Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Russia's Inter RAO, the state-run power utility, is also looking to build generators in Pakistan, the Kremlin said. Modernization by Russia of a steel plant in Karachi was also discussed.

The Pakistani president supported Russia's participation in the projects and called for their soonest implementation.

The leaders also pledged to work together to fight terrorism and prevent drug trafficking in Central and Southern Asia.

Zardari's visit is his first major foreign trip since Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan earlier this month.

In the wake of bin Laden's killing, his unpopular government faced criticism from the United States, where some politicians accused Pakistani authorities of helping the world's most wanted terrorist.

Medvedev and Zardari also discussed the turbulent situation in Afghanistan, and said they supported efforts aimed at reaching national reconciliation in that country.

The two leaders expressed "serious concerns" about the continuing terrorist threats and drug trafficking in the region.

The Pakistani delegation included Defense Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Prime Minister's Adviser Asim Hussain and State Minister for Foreign and Economic Affairs and Finance Hina Rabbani Khar.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani opened the country's second Chinese-made nuclear power reactor on Thursday, praising "unwavering" support from its long-time ally as Pakistan faces pressure over the discovery of Osama bin Laden.

China, Pakistan's most steadfast ally since its independence from Britain in 1947, has already helped Pakistan build one nuclear power facility in Chashma, in Punjab province.

A relationship of more than 60 years needs no assurance from any side .

We are co-operating on som many things right now that i cant even bother to list and that included defence relations at the highest level .

Russia will not chose Pakistan over India , that is a mistake the West made earlier and has learnt its lesson . The only ones making the mistake right now are Chinese but the Russians are wiser than both .

I kept trying to explain you this but we always knew . Dream of an anti India alliance by Russia-pak-china over i suppose ?

well we know there is not going to be a defense cooperation; but its a good start I must say. Things don't turn around just in a day.


Economic cooperation is better than defense cooperation which actually help people of a country.

Military activities

Over the past few years, the organisation's activities have expanded to include increased military cooperation, intelligence sharing, and counterterrorism.
There have been a number of SCO joint military exercises. The first of these was held in 2003, with the first phase taking place in Kazakhstan and the second in China. Since then China and Russia have teamed up for large-scale war games in 2005 (Peace Mission 2005), 2007 and 2009, under the auspices of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. At the joint military exercises in 2007 (known as "Peace Mission 2007") which took place in Chelyabinsk Russia, near the Ural Mountains and close to Central Asia, as was agreed upon in April 2006 at a meeting of SCO Defence Ministers, more than 4,000 Chinese soldiers participated. Air forces and precision-guided weapons were also likely to be used. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said that the exercises would be transparent and open to media and the public. Following the war games' successful completion, Russian officials began speaking of India joining such exercises in the future and the SCO taking on a military role. Peace Mission 2010, conducted September 9–25 at Kazakhstan's Matybulak training area, saw over 5,000 personnel from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan conduct joint planning and operational manoeuvres.
The SCO has served as a platform for larger military announcements by members. During the 2007 war games in Russia, with leaders of SCO member states in attendance including Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin used the occasion to take advantage of a "captive" audience: Russian strategic bombers, he said, would resume regular long-range patrols for the first time since the Cold War. "Starting today, such tours of duty will be conducted regularly and on the strategic scale," Putin said. "Our pilots have been grounded for too long. They are happy to start a new life."

Being a full member of the SCO means Pakistan will be exposed to the above annual events. This excludes other joint military drills which may happen in the same year. They will also get to share Intel gathering. That is what being in a Defence alliance is all about – securing each other’s mutual interest through trade and military cooperation?
In addition to that, I would personally not write off the chances of military technology collaboration or possible arms trade in the future as politics are full of twist and turns. Pakistan – Russia relationship has proven just that.

Mig-35 was merely a suggestion made by the Russians aimed towards India. The matter of fact that Pakistan has no need for it makes it a meaningless debate. Pakistan has their own F-16’s and JF-17’s and has the option to purchase both J-10s and J-11s from China in the near future.
In regards to your S-300 remark, again Pakistan will have the option to purchase the HQ-9 missile system from China. There is no need to trouble Russia for theirs. The S-300 post was just a light hearted comment made by a Pakistani member of ours and you shouldn’t take it too seriously. Despite the fact that you are obviously upset with what is going on between Russia and Pakistan right now.

Furthermore, if you think deeper, what’s the need for Pakistan to buy military technology or engage in an arms race with India when they are member of the SCO defence bloc? It’s highly unlikely that India will attack an ally of China and Russia right? It is equally unlikely for Pakistan to attack India. They would be more interested in bilateral trades and encouraging its country’s internal development. As peace loving Asians, we should be happy for them don’t you think?

There is no point arguing over who will and will not get loved more. It is 'politics' we are talking about. Therefore result gets determined by actions of interests. If India wants Russians to love them more, then they have to prove its usefulness and show them that you are committed to the relationship, and by swaying both ways won't help.

as if we wanted to buy arms from russia

what will we buy frm russia?
tank? no because we already have local one
aircrafts?no because we are already going for Fc-20 and we cant afford any other
Submarines?No we are getting them from china

we actually dont want any arms from russia except the RD-93 which is already provided to us with an offer of higher thrust upto 98KN.

I think economic corporation beat defence deals hands down! If Pakistan manages to sustain a steady economic growth with SCO; that would be far better than any Migs or s300's. Defence deals won't provide jobs to the ordinary or much needed foreign investment in Pakistan; so even if Russia offered, which it wont, we should focus on economic corporation and make best use of current propositions by Russia.
