LAHORE: Keeping in view possibility of electricity import from India, the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) has stepped up work on a new 220/132-kilovolt Shalimar grid station in Lahore.

“This grid is being set up at the best location to link up with India after the government decides on electricity import, as the site is adjacent to the Grand Trunk (GT) Road and a few kilometres from Wahga border,” said Rasul Khan Mehsud, Managing Director of Pakistan Electric Power Company and NTDC while talking to The Express Tribune.

The area houses various industries including steel re-rolling mills, cottage industry, spare parts manufacturers, flour mills and cold storages and power supply there usually gets disrupted during peak hours.

Latest equipment, which is being used in Europe, would be installed on the new grid to minimise electricity wastage and ensure supply without any interruption in case of voltage fluctuation, Mehsud said. The project, expected to be completed in May next year, will cost an estimated Rs1.5 billion, of which Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has loaned 903.94 million yen (Rs782.64 million) while NTDC has arranged Rs478.32 million.

To connect the Shalimar grid with Ravi grid, NTDC is laying power transmission lines over 9.5 km for which 40 pylons (towers) have been set up.

Following worsening of electricity shortage, Mehsud visited India a couple of months ago and held talks with energy officials for import of 500 megawatts in the first phase. However, the issue has lingered on and the government has not yet taken a final decision.

Indian power capacities are build over time with our hard earned money not from any international aid or something and govt. of India want to give electricity to pakistan without any reason.

If govt. of India says pakistan is exporting terrorism, or printing fake currency or drug trading then how can they reward the same country??

That pipeline is a pipe dream never gonna happen but TAPI can become a reality.

As on power, there are two point

- we need it
- why give it to someone who do everything it can to harm you (both in action & words)

You are not giving anything for free so save it. Business don't run on emotions. It runs on money. Whatever electricity provided will be charged as per agreed rates. India isn't doing any favors, its selling something, it has surplus.

Ifs its not surplus then don't give, simple as that. Can you prove its a favor? Is India giving it for free? Yes? If not then its a pure business transaction unless you can prove it otherwise.
And anything that happens between China and Pakistan is purely our business, we can call it whatever we like but has nothing to do with India or the thread. India is neither China and neither can the relationship between Pakistan and India be compared to that.

I can bet it will never materialize,
Pakistan needs 18000MW in total and we generate minimum 12000MW or 17000MW maximum depending upon river flow,gas supply and fuel oil supply.If we put all our resources into operation then we can easily generate 17000MW.

Electricity shortage in Pakistan is a management issue,33% of the total supply electricity is theft or people don't pay the bills.The supply companies do not pay to the generation companies and generation companies cant pay for the fuel.
If the Govt starts strict action against the thieves and non payers this issue will be solved in 6 months but this corrupt Govt preferred to install new projects to eat commission.

I am sure this deal is only concluding because some PPP minister is getting kick back in this...Indians being all to flexible with all kind of business arrangements..instead of building our own power capacity..we are easily giving into future economic blackmail by our sworn enemy....thats not smart at all!

@Pakistan: First negotiate on power tariff with India then decide on connectivity.
