Twin blasts in New Delhi's ‘Jama Masjid’


NEW DELHI: At least thirty people have been injured when twin blasts went off in famous ‘Jama Masjid’ of Old Delhi, according to Indian media.

Sources quoting eyewitnesses told that the blasts occurred at about 1700 (IST). Several fire tenders and ambulances rushed to the blast site. However, shops around the mosque were asked to shut down.

The blasts happened within 15 minutes of each other at the mosque shortly after several hundred people attended Friday prayers.

Police believed explosives were placed in plastic bags, with no evidence of a timer.

"As soon as the evening namaz (prayers) ended, the first blast went off," Yahya Bukhari, spokesman for the mosque told media. "I would request all Muslims not to panic.", he added.

Police initially barricaded the area and searched for more explosives and according to reports; the bomb squad defused a third bomb, which was planted inside the mosque.

The police don't suspect any terror organisation since the blasts were of very low intensite. Reports also suggest that an internal fued for the control over the management of the Jamma Masjid maybe a cause of the incident.
