New Delhi: Strengthening its capabilities to carry out special operations, the Indian Army is raising a new special forces battalion which will be deployed in the north-eastern sector.

A new battalion of the Parachute Regiment -- 11 Para (SF) -- is being raised and will be first deployed in the north-eastern sector, Army sources said here.

This will be eighth special forces battalion of the Parachute Regiment and will be deployed in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations in that region, they said.

The Parachute Regiment has 10 battalions under it and seven of them have been trained as special forces, which are supposed to carry out counter-terrorist operations during peacetime and sabotage enemy installations beyond enemy lines during wars.

The special forces battalions include the 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 21 para units, which are deployed in different sectors of the country and have also been given responsibility to handle any 26/11 type attacks if that occurs near their area of deployment.

The Army wants to increase the number of special forces troops to more than 10 battalions with around 700 men in each.

These battalions have been provided with modern equipment such as Tavor 21 assault rifles.

This is great.the important thing is that they will be deployed in the North-East as that region has been ravaged for so many years by extremist and terrorist groups.
Even during wars they can conduct covert operations.

As we are raising Arunachal scouts - Sikkim scouts We also need to raise special forces from Arunanchal Pradesh, Sikkim and train/equip them for behind enemy lines operation in time of war.

We should also raise a secrete special force recruiting Tibetan people.

And all of them should be well versed in chinese languages with uniform of PLA.

We already have raised a huge special force with predominantly tibetan and gurkha soldiers to conduct covert opertion against china in mind.Its name-Special Frontier Force with more than 20000 commandos.They are specialised in para jumping,mountain warfare,jungle warfare,amphibious warfare and urban warfare.Ak of their missions are kept secret even from the PM.They kicked the SSG's butt in a big way in 1971.

they should remove the Special forces battalions from the Parachute regiment and make a different Special forces regiment altogether Indian army SOF with 7 battalions of 700 men each and call it INASOF (Indian army special operations forces) based on the American Green berets because the Parachute regiment is not a SF force but the para commandos are a SF force this way the new SOF could conduct its own training and recruitment without having the Parachute regiment recruit and train new commandos

get more regular battalions for the Parachute regiment and split the Special forces battalions of the Parachute regiment and make a INSASOF regiment instead

Currently there are 7 paracommando battelions and 2 regular para batalions.The number of para commando battelions should be raised to atleast 14 to make a special forces division separated from regular formations.

good to see that this time around we are preparing for the worst should it come (ie1962) . i am glad i hope they raise more special forces units dedicated to the NE region . can someone up date me if the 4 divisions of mountain troops which were being freshly raised have achieved their desired strength?

Oh sir, you've got a lot to learn. Don't worry I was in your postion not too long ago.


Indian Navy MARCOs, modelled on SEALs, trained by SEALs in early days and still remain very close to SEALs in training and discipline. Many outsiders have actually said MARCOs selection and training is HARDER than USN SEALs.
