Default Boeing wins $469M contract for C-17 airlifter services to India

The Indian Air Force upped the total value of a contract with Boeing Co. for aircraft maintenance and upgrades by nearly half a billion dollars, according to an announcement from the Defense Department Wednesday.

The contract modification — worth $469 million — was made under a foreign military sales requirement for Boeing's C-17 Globemaster III airlifters, which means the actual contract to provide the services to India is between Boeing and the Defense Department.

The Indian Air Force is a member of the "virtual fleet," which is an international program that provides C-17 customers with comprehensive logistics support, including spare parts, support equipment, technology orders, sustainment engineering, and on-site field teams. This is accomplished through use of shared resources across the entire global fleet, providing all C-17 customers —regardless of the number of aircraft that they own — access to the same support services.

Boeing, which employs more than 3,200 people in more than two dozen locations in the Washington area, announced in June that the India’s Ministry of Defence signed an agreement with the U.S. government to acquire 10 C-17 Globemaster III airlifters for an estimated $4.1 billion, making India the C-17′s largest international customer.

I'm suprised at the media attention this gets. This deal is more important than the MMRCA.

I'm not so sure. They are both VERY important but in different ways. I suppose I can see where your coming from if you mean that with MKI/PAKFA/FGFA/LCA/AMCA inductions into IAF soon and with M2k and Mig-29 UPGs the MMRCA is not a clear "necessity" but I do see the MMRCA fills a clear void in the IAF's fleet/doctrine. yes the C-17, especially if ordered in significant numbers (25+) would be a real game changer for India and her power projection whistle MMRCA would only really supplement existing IAF fighter power projection.

What r u talking mate ? MMRCA is the biggest thread in defence.pk and their are max. no.of thread on this topic. I don't think there's any other deal more popular than MMRCA. Project 75I is more expensive than MMRCA but it isn't getting much coverage than MMRCA.

I believe he is saying the MMRCA gets too much/plenty of attention whilst C-17 deal is under reported and appreciated by media despite being expensive and VERY important to India.

I'm wondering for how long the service for $469M worthed contract 1year or two? don't you guys not be afraid that U.S army might plant some tracking device or listnening device into these 10 c-17 to monitor Indian airforce activities?

My personnel opinion, this deal is really getting expensive. Boeing is making way too much money as there's no way these aircrafts are so expensive.

I am sure the US will monitor the movement and usage of C-17 , especially any unusual or non-routine movement. These are strategic assets and not only the Americans but also the Russians or the Chinese would like to keep an eye on them. It is just as we too keep an eye out for all alarming movements in the neighbourhood including Central Asia, West Asia, South East Asia or the Indian Ocean. Tracking devices are not needed to keep a track of such massive aircraft as C-17s, There are other ways to keep track of their movements. Moreover tracking or listening devices can easily be detected and either disabled of used for disinformation. To the best of my knowledge, there are no restrictions on our use of the C-17s. This service contract will ensure that the C-17s are serviceable and operational whenever we want them.
