Taliban threat from ****** real, warns Air chief marshal Browne - The Times of India

BANGALORE: Increasing Talibanisation of Pakistan and shifting of terror focus from ****** region would pose a serious security threat to India in the next two years, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne said here Saturday.

"If the American troops and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) withdraw from Afghanistan as planned, 2013-14 are going to be crucial watershed years for India as far as the security of our western border is concerned," Browne hinted.

Noting that the emergence of Pakistani Taliban and Punjabi Taliban would pose a real threat to India, Browne said if the situation in the ****** region deteriorated after the allied forces withdraw, these (Taliban) elements may shift close to the Wagah border.

"Our fear is that we may have these forces very close to the Wagah border to deal with because the focal point of al-Qaida and Taliban has dramatically shifted very fast from Afghanistan to ****** border and North West Frontier Province to the heart of Pakistan," Browne said delivering the sixth Air Chief Marshal L M Katre Memorial Lecture at the HAL convention centre here.

Referring to the terror outfit Jamaat-ud-Dawah founder Hafiz Muhammad Saeed's speech at a seminar in Peshwar last week, the Air Chief said the game-plan of Taliban forces and terror elements in ****** region was to target Kashmir after "liberating" Kabul from allied forces.

"It is Kabul now we are dealing with. The moment we resolve that, we will take over the next phase to liberate Kashmir from Jammu & Kashmir state," Browne quoted Saeed as saying.

Admitting that unresolved borders with Pakistan and China were a baggage from the past, Browne said as a security concern, the convoluted borders were a point of friction with both the neighbouring countries who also collude in sharing conventional and missile technology to develop nuclear and conventional weapons.

"I can't think of any other model in the world where you are dealing with this kind of situation with two nuclear powered neighbouring countries having border issues with us as a common cause for point of friction," Browne told a gathering of about 500 members from the aeronautical community and air force families.

The Air Force Association (Karnataka branch) organises every year the Lakshman Madhav Katre Memorial Lecture in memory of the former air chief (1984-85) who was also chairman of the defence behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) in 1983.

HAL chairman R K Tyagi and Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) director P S Krishnan also spoke on the occasion.

BANGALORE: Anticipating a rapid Talibanization of Pakistan as the coalition forces are planning to withdraw troops from Afghanistan by 2013, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne on Saturday said the year ahead is going to be crucial for India.

The threat of Talibanlization of Pakistan could even reach the Wagah border if the situation in both Afghanistan and Pakistan worsens, Browne said at the Air Chief Marshal LM Katre Memorial Lecture on 'IAF: Strategies and Capabilities'.

"There is a systematic Talibanization of the state of Pakistan. The focal point of terrorism now has shifted from Afghanistan to not only North West Frontier Province but also to Punjab. And it is a major worry for India," he said.

Elaborating the plan to strengthening the capacities in northern parts of the country, he said the two airfields - Nyoma and Kargil - will be made fully operational airbases soon. "We have plans to deploy a Su-30MKI fighter jet squadron along with a transport base in Nyoma airbase. The Kargil airbase will have the newly acquired C-130 and C-17 transport aircraft with heavy lift capabilities to enhance the special operations."

The number of air squadrons projected for the year 2022 is 42. While the existing squadrons of MiG-29, Jaguar and Mirage-2000 will be upgraded, a good amount of the current fleet will be replaced with Rafale jets, HAL's LCA fighter aircraft and Sukhoi MKIs. The airlift capacity (transport aircrafts) airforce will be increased three times in ten years. The helicopter fleet will also be expanded by adding the new Apache attack choppers and another fleet of either Chinook helicopters or the new variant of Mi 26s.

I think he's trying to say that the gradual Talibanization that is happening in Pakistan might lead to an unconventional short conflict in the future. That country has failed to stop rapid radicalization of current youth and if you compare today's Pakistanis with that of those who were young in 60 and 70s, you will find a radical difference.

I have met some Pakistanis of both varieties and there's a huge difference of mentality for the Pakistanis of 70s and today's ones. The older generation was much more liberal and mature compared to today's generation. This devolution of national mindset towards the Talibanization is getting dangerous.

I just hope that Gen. Singh is keeping an eye on this. He's proven his dedication to the country by stripping this corrupt government raw. Wish more power is handed to tri-services to manage security better.
