Exactly. You have to feel sorry for these brave souls.

They put up a valiant fight and gave ten years of their life to the cause, but were ultimately shortchanged by the abject incompetence of the Pakistani government which has failed to bring their cause to international attention.

Another way to look at it is that they gave ten years of their lives to a worthless cause. They then realised that the cause is worthless, and it is better to live as Indians. Hence they returned to India, and are now enjoying the benefits of being Indians. Of living in a tolerant society that is ready to provide a fresh start even to people who waged war against it.

The "cause" of independence for kashmir was flamed by pakistan after it realised that it couldn't get kashmir from india by force. So a bogeyman of "azadi" was nurtured. Couldn't get kashmir, so started whining about "independence" for kashmir.

Like you, I do feel sorry for these people too. They became pawns for people in pakistan who wanted to use them to have power and clout. Ten years of their lives wasted. Had to escape at great peril and come back to India to live with dignity.

So after escaping from the Pakistani army, Mukhtar and his family were spotted by the Indian Army and arrested. They were then questioned and handed over to the Jammu Police. Only after Jammu police finished interrogating him was he then let off to meet his family.
