Lightbulb India's patience on terror not unlimited: Robert Gates

Appreciating India's restraint after the brazen Mumbai attacks in 2008, visiting US Defence Secretary Robert Gates Wednesday said it is "not reasonable" to think that New Delhi's patience would be unlimited in the face of another terrorist act.

"India has responded with great restraint and statesmanship after the Mumbai terror attacks. But the ability to continue with it after another attack is under question... It is not reasonable to assume that Indian patience is unlimited in case of another attack," Gates said at a press conference in New Delhi after meeting Indian Defence Minister AK Antony.

When asked if he had warned the Indian leadership of another imminent attack by terrorist outfits, Gates said there is better cooperation among states at present.

"I think there is very close cooperation not only between India and the US but other powers also. They also give warning information about such attacks or if some planning is going on," Gates added.

Gates arrived in India Tuesday on a two-day visit and has met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister SM Krishna, besides Antony.

Me'thinks that the USA is counting on India to start a war with Pakistan should Pakistan become unco operative with Uncle Sam. It is clear that the Pakistani public and the politicians of repute and the Pakistani military is starting to lose their patience with the US. Now multiple occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan and a possible skirmish with Iran makes the US military plate way too full to consider an attack on Pakistan. What better way to sort out Pakistan than to leave it to its own destiny with the TTP and to fuel a war between India and Pakistan (by sending in a few "Pakistani backed" gunmen to cause mayhem in some Indian city) and the USA backs India. Just hope that India doesn't fall for the trap even tho I am certain that we have a smart enough PM who will see the big picture. Best thing India and Pakistan can do is start some sort of dialogue to create a mechanism to monitor illegal activity which threatens each other within their own borders. Or else sooner or later these two nations are going to be the laughing stock of the world when they become pawns to serve the interests of a western king

This is very immature of Gates to give such statements in India as it will only worsen the already tense situation in the region, he is telling the terrorists about the implications of such an act on Indian soil and giving them an open invitation and at the same time preparing the International community.
It would have been more helpful only if he insisted over talks between Pak & India and joining hands against terrorism rather then telling India how they should react incase of such an event.

I don't know when will the Americans stop thinking of wars and start talking of peace, how can you ever bring peace through wars?
A war between Pakistan & India (Two Nuclear States) will not be a pleasant sight for the whole world and it is only the people of both the countries who will suffer while some will benefit like always.

I can't find anything interesting in this statement. Isn't that every leader saying before leaving to a or when reaches a country so as to please the audience.

Al-Qaeda may provoke new Indo-Pak war: Gates

Updated at: 1359 PST, Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Al-Qaeda may provoke new Indo-Pak war: Gates NEW DELHI: Al-Qaeda is seeking to de-stabilise the entire South Asia region and could trigger a war between nuclear-armed Pakistan and India, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates told reporters on Wednesday.

Groups under Al-Qaeda's "syndicate" in Afghanistan and Pakistan are trying "to destabilise not just Afghanistan, not just Pakistan, but potentially the whole region by provoking a conflict perhaps between India and Pakistan through some provocative act," Gates said during a visit to New Delhi.

"It's important to recognise the magnitude of the threat that the entire region faces," he said following talks with his Indian counterpart, A.K. Antony.

Gates cited three main groups operating under Al-Qaeda's "umbrella," the Taliban forces fighting in Afghanistan, Taliban elements targeting Pakistan's government and the Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in Pakistan focused on India.

Although he praised India for exercising restraint after the 2008 Mumbai attacks -- which Delhi blamed on LeT -- Gates suggested India could not be expected to remain restrained if it was attacked again.

"I think it's not unreasonable to assume India patience would be limited were there to be further attacks," he said.

The Mumbai assault left 166 dead and India has demanded Pakistan come under more international pressure to rein in militant groups on its soil.

Gates described India as a vital partner in the struggle against extremist threats, expressed appreciation for its economic aid to Afghanistan and said that he discussed how to bolster US-India military cooperation.

The worst thing that could happen at this stage is for Pak to go to war - for whatever reason. A bad situation in the Af - Pak region will only get worse.

For India too it is better this way.Wars tend to polarise fissiparous elements in a nation.

As things stand, India ' achieves' more thru peace than war. Unless something drastic happens any time soon.

And what exactly has India 'achieved' by pursuing peace. A belligerent neighbor who at a blink of eye threatens to push the red button out of cowardice? Has the terrorist infra across the border dismantled and people running them behind bars? Is the recruitment of terrorists seized for good in Pakistan?? It's about the **** psyche, nothings gonna change through dialog.. Dialogs have been going on for far too long, It's time to take off our gloves and hope that they stop this nuisance of exporting IT (International Terrorism).

War is not the answer but patience has limits.
    warlock thanked this.

Peace through superior firepower. The one with the bigger gun always wins

India wont attack though. Minor skirmish maybe, full fledged war; nope.

Dying one by one by hands of brainwashed fanatics is not acceptable. One needs balls to challenge the adversary, these ***** like tactics of proxy war is sign of the fear the resides in the Pakistan establishment, god forbid if there is a war everyone on this forum knows what the end result would be. But India doesn't need a war now, we have done good economically and war will spoil all the good we have done in last decade. But then Pakistan needs to stop this nonsense. Average people in both countries are suffering now, Pakistani society has to recognize the pain and anger one feels when terrorists attack at will and kill innocent people. We here in India have been going through this for far too long. Someone needs to take a hard stand becuase ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Let's make it clear to our indian friends:

You are more than welcomed to doubt whether China will directly involved in your "possible" war with Pakistan, but even your hardcore nationalists would not deny the capacity of China's production.

Let me just assure you guys one thing -- you invade Pakistan, which is China's only ally, you should expect unlimited army supplies be provided to Pakistan from China.

The choice is clear and easy for indians -- be America's cheap toy, or behave yourself and stop being south Asia's terrorists.

Mind your own Country.......in case of a war china is free to take sides.....and you can supply your entire army to Pakistan if you want ..at the cost of China India Trade.....which is more than 10 times China Pakistan Trade.
