LUCKNOW: The Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh police on Saturday arrested two suspected terrorists of Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HuJI) who they believe were behind the November 23 serial blasts in the court premises of Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad.
Police said Mohammed Tariq (30) and Khalid Mujahid (24) were picked up on Saturday morning from near Barabanki railway station. Police also claimed another HuJI terrorist, Sajjad, who provided explosives for the blasts, was arrested by Jammu & Kashmir police on Saturday morning.
Additional DGP (law and order) Brij Lal said, "The two serial blasts accused were also involved in the Gorakhpur blast on May 22 and the Sankat Mochan temple blast in Varanasi last year." The arrests were made on a tip-off from a central intelligence agency.
Tariq and Khalid were arrested while they were going to deliver 1.25 kg of RDX, six detonators and ammonium nitrate rods to an accomplice for making bombs, police said. The two terrorists had planned to take delivery of the bombs from their accomplice who was to arrive by a train at the Barabanki railway station on Saturday morning, police said. Three cell phones, SIM cards and HuJI literature were seized from them.
According to police, the terrorists had planned the blasts in June. While the blasts in Lucknow court were executed by Khalid, Tariq supervised Faizabad blasts and Mukhtar alias Raju, a Bangladeshi, was behind the Varanasi blast. The police claimed that preliminary investigations revealed Tariq as the UP chief of HuJI. A doctor of Unani medicine, Tariq came in contact with HuJI in 2003 when he was studying in Saharanpur and Muzzafarnagar.
"Another terrorist, Khalid Kashmiri, now in Tihar jail, along with Mujahid visited Tariq's house in November 2006. After consulting Tauqir, their chief in Pakistan, Kashmiri selected Tariq for organisational work in UP," said a senior police officer.
He said Mujahid joined the outfit after he met Abdul Raqeeb and Master Rizwan during 2001-02 in Amroha. Raqeeb was subsequently killed in an encounter in 2003 while Rizwan was arrested in April 2006.
