A major infiltration bid was today foiled by the troops when they gunned down heavily armed militants in Uri sector in Jammu and Kashmir. A Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar told UNI that troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from ***************** Kashmir (***) early this morning under the cover of darkness. When challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened fire with automatic weapons, he said, adding troops sealed the entire area to foil any attempt by militants to escape. Lt Colonel Brar said a fierce encounter ensued during which four militants were killed. A large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants, who were being identified, he said. The operation was over, he said adding this was the first infiltration attempt from *** said during the summer. The encounter took place three days after GOC-in-C northern command, Lt General K T Parnaik visited the forward areas in north Kashmir, where he was briefed by field commanders deployed on LoC about the measures taken to thwart the infiltration from across the the border, where snow had started melting. Lt Gen Parnaik accompanied by GOC Chinar Corps Lt Gen S A Hasnain visited troops deployed on the LoC in the frontier district of Kupwara. A large portion of fencing on the LoC had been damaged due to heavy snowfall this winter. Hundreds of militants are waiting across the border, for waiting an opportunity to sneak into this side.
