Default Indian army kills 4 suspected rebels in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: The Indian army says soldiers have shot and killed four suspected rebels who allegedly intruded into the Indian portion of Kashmir from Pakistani territory to attack government forces and targets.

Army spokesman Lt Col J S Brar says the incident occurred Thursday in the Uri sector close to a cease-fire line dividing Kashmir between longtime rivals India and Pakistan.

There was no independent confirmation of the gunbattle.

Since 1989, a violent separatist insurgency seeking Kashmir’s independence or merger with Pakistan and the ensuing crackdown by Indian forces have killed nearly 68,000 people in Kashmir.

Indian authorities say the number of attacks by the insurgents has been reduced substantially following an improvement in ties with Pakistan.

A major infiltration bid was today foiled by the troops when they gunned down heavily armed militants in Uri sector in Jammu and Kashmir. A Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar told UNI that troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) noticed a group of militants sneaking into this side from ***************** Kashmir (***) early this morning under the cover of darkness. When challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened fire with automatic weapons, he said, adding troops sealed the entire area to foil any attempt by militants to escape. Lt Colonel Brar said a fierce encounter ensued during which four militants were killed. A large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants, who were being identified, he said. The operation was over, he said adding this was the first infiltration attempt from *** said during the summer. The encounter took place three days after GOC-in-C northern command, Lt General K T Parnaik visited the forward areas in north Kashmir, where he was briefed by field commanders deployed on LoC about the measures taken to thwart the infiltration from across the the border, where snow had started melting. Lt Gen Parnaik accompanied by GOC Chinar Corps Lt Gen S A Hasnain visited troops deployed on the LoC in the frontier district of Kupwara. A large portion of fencing on the LoC had been damaged due to heavy snowfall this winter. Hundreds of militants are waiting across the border, for waiting an opportunity to sneak into this side. However, troops have already intensified night and foot patrolling to foil all infiltration attempts. UNI BAS AE BD1540 NNNN
