Default Marvel Comics introduces mixed-race Spider-Man

Marvel Comics has unveiled a new half-black, half-Latino Spider-Man, who replaces the recently killed-off Peter Parker....

Miles Morales, introduced in Marvel's Ultimate Fallout Issue 4, is a nerdy teenager from New York City.

Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso said the new web-slinger "speaks to our rich cultural heritage" in the US.

Parker died in Ultimate Spider-Man Issue 160 in June during a fight with his bitter enemy, Green Goblin.

Like Parker, Morales is a geeky, working-class teenager from the boroughs of New York City.

Morales lives with his black and Latino parents in ethnically diverse Brooklyn, while Parker was white and raised by his aunt and uncle in a mainly white neighbourhood in Queens.

"Going into this we knew we wanted to make a statement about the 21st century," said Alonso.

The Marvel editor-in-chief, whose mother was from England and father from Mexico, said he cried when Barack Obama was elected president "partly because he was African-American but largely because of the fact that he was mixed race".

Alonso added that when Morales "peels off his mask now, he's going to have a very different look and he's going to resonate emotionally with all sorts of new readers".

He told AFP news agency Spidey writer Brian Michael Bendis is Jewish and has two adopted children from Africa.

"So I know for him it was definitely personal," Alonso said.

Wow..talk about radical comic book stories. First superman gives up his US citizenship, now Peter Parker is dead and we have a black Spiderman.

I think the comic book writers are moving away from white American superheroes to International multicultural ones

True. But they will always be American. Have you ever noticed in the transformers how all the Autobots are US made cars and planes, while the Decepticons are European or Russian make?

Thats the key word. Let the kids enjoy spiderman. There is no reason why a mixed race spiderman wouldn't be just as entertaining

Not denying that . But comics are a indication of the change of social structure. Like when the Indian character made an appearance in Archies comics or when Superman gave up his US citizenship. We all know it exists, but induction into the mainstream entertainment sort of makes it too real. A big change from the traditional approach.Even the aliens were white and US citizens back then!!!

True. The context of 'kids' will have to be broadened because when it comes to comics or graphic novels, adults escaped into their cliche 'inner children' and enjoy these escape mechanism just as real kids do. Although we have to admit some of the artworks for the female characters are pretty racy.

Anyway...The new Spiderman is not of the 'Amazing' universe but belongs in the 'Ultimate' universe. The latter is an attempt by Marvel to 'reboot' the franchise to fit the new generation. A non-white Spiderman is not new. Spiderman 2099, a defunct title and one that I have in its entirety, has the lead named Miguel O'Hara.

    Spider-Man 2099 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O'Hara) is a fictional comic book superhero, created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi in 1992 for Marvel Comics' Marvel 2099 line. His secret alter ego is Miguel O'Hara, a brilliant geneticist living in New York in the year 2099 A.D. who is attempting to recreate the abilities of the original Spider-Man in other people and later suffers a related accident that causes half his DNA to be re-written with a spider's genetic code.
Not as obviously mixed as today's Ultimate Spiderman. But not as 'whitebread' as Peter Parker either. I like the series and thought it had longevity potential to stand side-by-side with the Amazing series.

    Not necessarily.

Rachet (Autobot) transformed into a Toyota ambulance. Starscream and other 'seekers' (Decepticon) transformed into F-15s. Brawl transformed into a Leopard whereas in the movie, an M1 Abrams.
