Nowadays everyone knows about it, but I remember when I was young, I read a news story about this man in Europe who lost his entire life savings (hundreds of thousands) and his business due to falling for a scam email.

There have even been a few cases recently as well, like this one:

I recall an incident a while back in which a poor victim not only responded to the mail but physically traveled to Africa, where he and his girlfriend were promptly abducted and had to be rescued by local law enforcement.
