Saudi King invites Iranian President to Islamic summit in Mecca



Mecca - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been officially
invited by King Abdullah of Saudi
Arabia, to attend an emergency
Islamic summit in Mecca in August.

Leaders of the 57-member
Organization of Islamic Cooperation
(OIC) have been invited to attend an
emergency summit in Mecca, the
holiest City in Islam, to be held on
August 15-16. The Saudi Gazette reported King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz
has called the “extraordinary Islamic
solidarity meeting to ensure... unity
during this delicate time as the Muslim
world faces dangers of fragmentation
and sedition.”

OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin
Ihsanoglu told the Arab News that the issue of Syria, along with the plight of
Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, will
feature in the summit's agenda. The
King's invitation to the Iranian
President was extended by the Saudi
ambassador to Tehran. According to Press TV no definite decision has been reached if Ahmadinejad will accept the
invitation, noting that various aspects
of his presence are being studied.

Tensions are fraught between the
Sunni Kingdom and its Shi'ite
neighbor, exacerbated by Saudi's
sending of troops to help quell the
uprising in Bahrain. Saudi has accused
the Islamic Republic of stirring up tensions amongst the Shi'ite
population in the eastern,oil-rich part
of the Kingdom.
Additionally Saudi
Arabia has threatened to develop its own nuclear weapons in response to
the perceived threat from Iran's
increasing nuclear capability.

Haaretz reported the Iranian President said earlier this week that he would
attend this year's Hajj pilgrimage in
Mecca if formally invited. Hajj is
scheduled to take place in late
October.

The divisions run too deep and wide. I don't see anything happening, other than some half concocted American attempt to tame the the Iranians without firing a bullet.

Besides, what is this recent hoopla about an emergency meeting in Saudi? Surely, we can't be that naive and simpletons to believe that they have Iran's best interests at heart!

On topic this may be a little too late. IMO, Pakistan should have been at the front line trying to remove the angst among these countries long ago.

Saudi invites Iran for extraordinary Muslim summit



AFP - Saudi King Abdullah invited Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for an extraordinary summit of Muslim leaders to be held this month in the holy city of Mecca, state news agency SPA reported Sunday.

The Saudi monarch "sent a written letter to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inviting him to attend the extraordinary Islamic solidarity meeting which will be held in Mecca" in mid-August, SPA reported.

Tensions have been running high between the Sunni-dominated kingdom and Shiite Iran as both regional powers had taken opposite stances on the uprisings in Bahrain and Syria.

Iran had voiced support to a Shiite-led uprising in Bahrain which Saudi Arabia had sent troops to crush last year.

In Syria, the kingdom had called for arming rebels against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad -- who belongs to the Alawite minority, an off-shoot of Shiite Islam -- while Iran has been repeatedly accused of sending military aid to the Syrian government. Tehran has denied the claims.

Saudi Arabia last month called for the summit in a bid at "unifying the ranks" of Muslims.
