because of money, what else would it be, a real defector will stay and fight, not run away. The Sunni states in the Middle East see this as an opportunity to remove a secular regime controlled by a minority Shia sect. United States, Europe and Israel also want to get rid of a threat. So now they send weapons and money to the rebels in order to fight a proxy war, and hope that Sunni majority in Syria will join them.
