What do you think why he defected?
Apparently these are just rumors...How is he just going to defect? How is he going to leave Damascus and defect when there are armed guards all around. It makes no sense for him to defect either, he is a powerful figure, he doesn't need several millions of dollars when he can have practically anything he wants as it is..

The Syrian conflict is fairly simple. A portion of Sunni population was unhappy with Assad and rose up against him. The Sunni states in the Middle East see this as an opportunity to remove a secular regime controlled by a minority Shia sect. United States, Europe and Israel also want to get rid of a threat. So now they send weapons and money to the rebels in order to fight a proxy war, and hope that Sunni majority in Syria will join them.
