Russia again successfully test fires Bulava missiles

Russia successfully test launched two Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles on Friday, Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Igor Konashenkov said.

The missiles were launched from the Borey-class Yury Dolgoruky nuclear-powered submarine in the White Sea and hit designated targets at the Kura test range on Kamchatka, some 6,000 kilometers to the east.

This was the troubled Bulava’s 18th test launch. Only 11 launches have been officially declared successful.

But some analysts suggest that in reality the number of failures is considerably larger. Russian military expert Pavel Felgengauer said that of the Bulava's first 12 test launches, only one was entirely successful.

Despite several previous failures, officially blamed on manufacturing faults, the Russian military has insisted that there is no alternative to the Bulava.

The Bulava (SS-NX-30) SLBM carries up to 10 MIRV warheads and has a range of over 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles). The three-stage ballistic missile is designed for deployment on Borey-class nuclear submarines.

It looks like it is 6 thermonuclear warheads for 8000km of range.

BTW, it is sufficient for Russia to reach at any corner of the US soil.

Russia should drop this plan and go for Sineva missile which is said to be more advanced than this.

Sineva,ss-n-23? That is a kind of old Liquid missile on the active service Div-type subs. You mean the Deepblue(ss-n-23m1) missile that is a life extension and modified version of the Sineva.

The missile possesses advanced defense capabilities making it resistant to missile-defense systems. Among its abilities are evasive maneuvering, mid-course countermeasures and decoys, and a warhead fully shielded against both physical and Electromagnetic pulse damage. The Bulava is designed to be capable of surviving a nuclear blast at a minimum distance of 500 meters. The Bulava's advanced technology allows it to carry up to 10 hypersonic, individually guided, maneuverable warheads with a yield of 100–150 kt each.Borei class submarines carrying Bulava missiles are expected to be an integral part of the Russian nuclear triad until 2040
Bulava more advance missile than Sineva.

Thats not the maximum range of the Bulava.

At 07:20 Moscow Time, the Bulava missile lifted off from the Yuri Dolgoruky submarine stationed in the submerged position in the White Sea and 33 minutes later its warheads successfully impacted in the Pacific Ocean, some 9,300 kilometers from the launch site, demonstrating maximum range of the new weapon

So does that mean Bulava will finally enter service? That's six straight successful test in a row.

Yes, Yury Dolgorukiy armed with Bulava SLBM will enter service sometime in Q1 of 2012, then followed by Alexander Nevsky in Q4 of 2012.
