Default Nawaz Sharif not to contest upcoming bypolls

ISLAMABAD: PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has decided not to contest upcoming bypolls as he is "disappointed" by his coalition partner PPP's attitude on the issue of reinstating dozens of judges sacked by President Pervez Musharraf during Emergency last year. Now, if NS contest form will again rejected due to heavy charges upon him particularly "Hijacking", then it will be en-lighted in front of public along with other serious matter related to him.

PML-N joint secretary Siddique-ul-Farooque on Saturday confirmed that Sharif would not contest the bypolls scheduled for June but did not give any reason.

Sources said the PPP's attitude on the judges' issue had disappointed the PML-N leader and led to his decision of not taking part in the by-poll, the Dawn newspaper reported.

A PML-N official said Sharif had informed the party's central working committee (CWC) about his decision on Friday when it met to discuss the situation in the wake of his talks with Zardari in Dubai.

Though Sharif announced on Friday that the PML-N and PPP had agreed to restore the deposed judges on May 12, PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and other leaders of the party have refused to commit themselves to this deadline.

The two main players in Pakistan's ruling coalition have already missed the self-imposed deadline of April 30 for reinstating about 60 judges who were sacked by Musharraf for not endorsing last year's Emergency rule.

The PML-N official told the paper that some members of the CWC had suggested that party president Shahbaz Sharif too should not contest the by-polls to the Punjab assembly but this proposal was rejected.
