Naek casts doubts on meeting deadline
ISLAMABAD: The government on Friday hinted that the deadline for the restoration of the deposed judges might not be met as Law Minister Senator Farooq H Naek cast doubts for holding the National Assembly session on May 12 to pass the resolution.“I do not foresee that the assembly session would possibly be summoned on the fixed date due to some urgency,” Naek said while talking to newsmen at the Parliament House.
However, at the same time, the minister said if the PPP and the PML-N reached an agreement, a summary session would be summoned. He said differences persisted among the committee members over the mode of restoring the judges, and the matter was now in the hands of the leaders of the major coalition parties as the committee had finalised its proposals and handed it over to them.
“Aitzaz Ahsan and Abdul Hafiz Pirzada had difference of opinions, so we asked them to submit their point of views in writing, and the committee had received submissions of Aitzaz. It is hoped that Pirzada would also deliver it soon,” he added.
Replying to a question about the status of the present judges, Senator Naek said in case the present judges remained intact, the legal complexity could be resolved through an amendment in the Supreme Court Act.
“The act can be amended through a bill in parliament or otherwise an ordinance can also be promulgated under Article 59 of the Constitution,” he said. To another query, he said Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani had directed the law ministry to speed up the work on drafts of the provincial autonomy, the NAB Ordinance and jail reforms.
