Default Zardari Politics. Future of Zardari ?

Zardari assumed office as President of Pakistan 9 September 2008, his tenure would end the same day 2013.

There is no convention of "when" the president would be re-elected, and remember Musharraf got himself re-elected a bit early than his tenure as President from his own hand picked parliament. it is just another precedence, but very useful in hour of need.

what is Zardari's plan, what is his great game? for obvious reasons if he wants to survive in Pakistani environment there is only one place that he can remain safe. that is president house. establishment will not try to kill a president, at any given time, as this is one of their leverage spaces into power.

anyway, back to what is aim of Zardari. obviously its to maintain himself as President.
first let me counter what is meant by not to be the president, well the answer is simple to be party head of PPPP, which is not in good books of Establishment... and that establishment has a history of terminating party leaders.

Now what are Zardari's options to remain alive and in power?

To me its to remain as President. plain and simple. and thats the only position safest for him to continue playing his game and since we have a parliamentary system therefore, 2/3 majority is probably least expected to be a way to terminate Zardari from Presidency.

now there are two possibilities how Zardari can remain in office.

1- Delay elections for another year/6 months so that he is coming to end of his tenure and get re-elected by the same parliament where he clearly has majority, unless MQM and ANP backs out and do not participate in an "apparent protest" same can be done by PMLN, who thus far has earned the label of friendly opposition aka SamjhotaExpress. and thus Zardari would be re-elected for another 5 years. that is till 2018

2- He gets re-elected before his tenure, that is he decides like Musharraf to get the necessary vote from the parliament for his second term (precedence by musharraf) so in this scenario as well you have president Zardari for another 5 years.

Now I will leave the question to you guys, how Zardari would create such a situation that would delay elections for another 6 months/Year with accordance to the constitutional requirements.

and/or would get re-elected from this parliament well before the end of his tenure.

PPPP already has majority in Senate.

To me if this parliament is not send home early, or elections are not Announced (which also reside with Zardari with precedence given by Yahya to delay the results as well) and that Gilani said that even if PMLN resigns we shall continue to "complete" our tenure. although that would be a bit difficult..

its not about Gilani sorry if we are diverted towards him its about Zardari getting re-elected by this parliament, be it stretched or be it early re-election of president.

    Its about Zardari stupid !!!

and he surely has a chance from this parliament that is being considered as "sacred to save the system" by a friendly opposition and coalition of the corrupt five is obviously going to run it till the re-election takes place.

re-election of Zardari will also ensure a strong position for PPP in next general elections. remember we are on tentative schedule...

so there is no issue whatsoever regarding the conventions or what can they do and what they cannot...

    Finally,

The question is what can be done to stop this from happening?

If he is re-elected, what will be the situation then?

Once he's out of power, he's done.

He better run off to UK or somewhere before he gets hunt down.

But knowing that the fate of Pakistan lies within the hands of the average Pakistani voter..Zardari will probably win.

    So.. what is better?

    Stop calling Democracy a system!

Any one under the age of 35 does not have clear vision or maturity to decide wisely, how come democracy be any beneficial.
Sindhi villagers, do not know a squat that Zardar handed out $millions in India, while they work free for their master.
Democracy only promotes mafia system or in other words divide and rule.

If democracy is a better system, then why is China set to become a major superpower?

What has democracy brought us? It all sounds so good on a paper and in theory, but look what it has brought us.
Wake up and smell the coffee bud, there are many forms of governance/rulership and each suited for a nations own needs.

So far, democracy hasn't brought us what we have been looking for, prosperity.

There are constitutional provisions to delay elections and there are no legal hindrances to Zardari getting re-elected from the side parliament. However, the former is not likely. The latter -may- happen if the right inducements are thrown the way of Zardari's coalition partners--they too have a strong stake in Zardari's presidency. They know what post-Zardari era will mean to them. BUT... getting a 2/3rd majority is not going to be easy; the PPP Senate position is not of a majority by itself even if PPP is the largest political party there now. But the 2/3rd vote will from both the NA and the Senate combined. I think if Zardari tries to get re-elected from the same parliament then he will face very strong opposition from all except his current coalition partners.

As to Zardari surviving without the umbrella of the Presidency, I think he has a fair chance. The Swiss cases are likely to lapse if the govt. does not send a reference to the Swiss govt. and after 2012 the next govt. may not find it that easy considering the lapsing of cases as well as many challenges to face. Besides, Zardari has braved the prison for a combined 11 years and I think he will survive okay. It is a different matter that he is going to be hunted down like Benazir Bhutto was--physically.

I am hoping Imran Khan comes to power and cleanup the system, including taking to task not only Zardari but also Nawaz Sharif, Altaf Hussain AND those generals who interfered with the body-politic of Pakistan while amassing personal wealth. If Zardari is singled out then it will not be justice.

I would'nt say that. I would say democracy is the worst political system except that other systems are even worst. So Pakistanis have to be careful who they vote for.

If Pakistanis vote for Zardari or Nawaz Sharif again, then they deserve to be miserable.

To be re-elected Zardari needs simple majority. 2/3 is for impeachment.

Zardari is without a doubt a brave man, but survival instincts will prevail. What he has done to establishment, will be revenged, how is a question.

My argument is that President house is the safest place for him, else its bravery or stupidity, to be out there 'vulnerable', hence he will try "everything" to ensure that he stays in president house.

So dont you think that the only way for Zardari is constitutional crisis?

how can we avoided or countered that?

I have seen that you have an unorthodox suggestions, what you think should be done to counter Zardari's re-election?

wont it just be a crisis or waiting for another 5 years?
