    Arrow Musharraf Berates Muslim World

This is old news but due to the Pakistani NYC bomber this is warranted in a thread. What Pervez Musharraf has said is absolutely correct and this shows what a great mind he has.

    Musharraf berates Muslim world

    By Zaffar Abbas in Islamabad
    Saturday, 16 February, 2002, 16:04 GMT

Musharraf wants young Muslims to study in the West

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has said Islamic countries will remain backward unless they concentrate more on scientific and technological development.

Muslim nations are internally involved in fratricidal conflicts and perceived by the outside world as terrorists with little attention being given on their uplift, he said.

General Musharraf made his comments in an address to a conference of science and technology attended by ministers from Muslim countries.

President Musharraf said the time had come for Islamic nations to take part in collective self-criticism.

Once such an assessment is made, it would not be difficult to realise that the entire Islamic world was far behind the developed world, he argued.

    'The most unhealthy'

The Muslim Ummah, or the Islamic world, he said was presently living in darkness.

"Today we are the poorest, the most illiterate, the most backward, the most unhealthy, the most un-enlightened, the most deprived, and the weakest of all the human race," he told the delegates.

Musharraf wants to rid Pakistan of extremism

President Musharraf then made a comparison of the economic growth in Islamic countries with some developed countries.

While the collective Gross National Product of the all Muslim countries stands at $1,200bn, that of Germany alone is $2,500bn and that of Japan $5,500bn.

He said one of the main reasons for this disparity was that none of the Muslim countries had ever paid any attention to educational and scientific development.

He asked the countries participating in the conference to concentrate on scientific and technological development in order to compete with the developed world.

    The real jihad

The Pakistani leader suggested the setting up of a multi-billion dollar fund for such a purpose.

Beside this, he said, there was a need for creating centres of excellence in the field of science and technology.

He also called for the creation of scholarships for young scientists to seek knowledge from universities in developed countries.

President Musharraf described it as the real jihad, or holy war.

Unless this was done, the Islamic world and Muslims would always be perceived as backward, illiterate - those who only indulge in extremism and violence.

A tad emotional perhaps, but my view is that Musharraf should come back. It is not important whether he wins an election. What is important is that he provides leadership to people who are fedup of what is going on at present.

The worst the government can do is to file cases against him, which - given what people think of the government - will simply make him even more popular. And the worst anyone else can do is try to kill him. Given his past, he knows how to take care of himself. God forbid, even if "they" succeed, he will truly live forever. He has a limited number of years left anyway and a life that has been well spent and full of achievement. If he were to put his life on the line for this country it would not be forgotten by Pakistanis...

I understand your frustration, but please be reasonable. The current shortage is not because of a generation issue. It is basically due to circular debt. Why are we in a circular debt conundrum... that is for you to research. Let's not go off on an electricity tangent here since we have several power related threads for that.

It can be a factor but not the only reason for half day load shedding.

Two completely different views on Mush...See the beauty of democracy ... Anyways let me share my thoughts...

    - Competition always bring the best out of people... Every leader is not corrupt and is not saint either...However corrupt politicians will keep the other's on toes...In other words more the choices for people more politicians will have to do for people to ensure they get elected again... Unfortunately this is long and paingul process but results are positive and long term...

BJP won election in 1999 but lost in 2003 marginally to Congress... However Congress did exceptionally good in 2008 because they deliver a lot.... If you follow indian politics closely you will see indian voters have now matured and they question the progress leaders have brought to them rather than the caste-religion etc.... A great example RSS doing badly in mumbai....

In short it will take time however the more the competition better it is going to be for Pakistan democracy...last this they need is another coup no matter what...

Democracy is always slow.. Because it requires consensus. On the other hand a dictatorship can turn results fast, since there are no conflicting views.. So people do get impressed by the speed of results and mistake reckless speed for good governance. The downside is that just as good policies are put in place without any hinderance, so are bad policies. The long term results of those bad policies start manifesting themselves years down the line.. for example, the policies of Zia that led to radicalistion of Islam in Pakistan..

The problem with Pakistan has been that democracy never got a sustained period of time to deliver results. Due to various reasons, it has been interrupted by one dictator or the other.

The problem with democracy is that there are too many people who need a cut to get anything moving and that stops things from moving.

Trust me there is absolutely no fear of death in Gen. Musharraf's heart. He fought for Pakistan in hhis young life so there is no hesitation on his part to give up his life for Pakistan.

I assure you that a date will be issued very very soon insha-Allah. As you may have heard that timing is everything.
