Default Are all Pakistanis Equal ?

Are all Pakistanis equal? | Al Jazeera Blogs

By Imran Khan in * Asia on May 29th, 2010

Lahore, once again, has seen immense violence on its streets.

I landed in this most iconic of Pakistani cities in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

At first light, I visited the site of one of the mosques attacked a day earlier.

Having covered countless blasts in the country, I was prepared to hear the heart-wrenching tales of those who survived, of those who buried their dead, of mothers in shock.

Pakistanis are a by-and-large honest and open bunch, ready to share grief. But standing outside of the mosque, I was met with stunted emotion.

You could see it in the eyes of the young men who stood outside - eyes reddened with grief, yet no one would talk to me to tell me their story.

This attack on a minority community has left them reeling. They were already scared - having received threats from the Pakistani Taliban.

Those threats, It would seem, have come true. The fear the attacks have created has put this community under pressure.

We were told to stop filming, to please leave the area, to stop bearing witness to tragedy.

One man simply said "leave us alone".

The Ahmadis have long been persecuted for their religious beliefs. They say they are Muslims but they insist Prophet Muhammad was not the last prophet. Muslim scholars say this belief puts them out of the fold of Islam.

Despite that, they have flourished in Pakistan and are represented in all walks of life.

Those that died in Friday's attack included journalists, lawyers, businessmen and bureaucrats.

As a fellow colleague pointed out to me at the scene: "Unless you ask, who can tell who is Ahmadi, Shia, Sunni? We are all Pakistani now. The ones responsible for this aren't."

But minorities in Pakistan may be getting the feeling that they are not accepted by all Pakistanis. And they don't like it.

In the end I walked away from the Ahmadi mosque.

As I did, I saw black-clad young men with heavy hearts walk with tears swelling in their eyes.

They did not want to talk, and you could tell they felt alone in the country of their birth.

"We are Pakistanis and this is what they do to us," was the only comment I could solicit.

It got me thinking. If nothing else, Pakistan must rally around its minority communities. If it remains silent, then there can only be one victor - those who believe Pakistan is a monolithic state.

    That would be a shame.

The rights of minorities are graphically illustrated in the flag of the country. The white bar on the side represents them. If the flag goes all green then it is Pakistan that will further suffer.

Politicians and the Pakistani establishment have clamoured to condemn the attack, but condemning is a huge leap from protecting.

Just speaking to people on the streets of Lahore, you get the feeling that protection - regardless of belief - is what all Pakistanis want.

we have our landed elites/industrialists / politicians - 80% of the police force is used to protect them. they dont pay taxes, dont pay back the loans.

then we have the civilian establishment - secretaries, judges and baboos - corruption is the name of the game - they find 'loopholes' for the elites / politicians to evade taxes - steal the peoples money.

then we have the military establishment - no one, i repeat no one can touch them - they have their own rules, however they are the most disciplined and organised - the rank and file by and large is not corrupt.

then there are the trading community - they dont pay taxes - they find ways to evade and convert their 'black' money to 'white'.

then there is the salaried classes - the most 'over-taxed' community in this country - if the govt had its way, they would tax them for eating, sleeping and defecating besides their salary.

then there is the agricultural community - they dont pay any taxes of any kind. they steal the water, power and dont pay back the agricultural loans. this dosnt include the poor small farmers who dont have 'anything'.

then there is the labour class who live on less than $1/- a day - enough said.!!!

today Transparency International said corruption in 2009 increased by 13% over 2008

pakistan is the 42nd most corrupt country in the world.

last year there was corruption of 225 billion rupees - nearly 3 bill US$$$

police is the most corrupt institution.

OTOH the motorway police is the most transparent institution in the country.

so yes we pakistanis are not equal whichever way you want to look at it.

my grandfather was also from dehli. worked in bombay for a while and then during partition came to Pakistan. we never had this problem so your point is baseless. in fact, we have had a great life in Pakistan. God bless Quaid-e-Azam who worked so hard for this nation.

Inequality is worldwide. We do not live in an equal world.

Where it hurts is when the state for its own vested interests or inability to act condones acts of violence / persecution against a community or group of people.

This does not relate to Pakistan alone all nations are in the same league.

So what if someone prays to a different God or prays in a different manner ? He still is a citizen of the country & must get the same sense of security as others get.

The essence of life is to take all team members along and not create barriers in the minds.

    EH,

Gen Parvez Mushraff is a Mojahir - born in Delhi moved to Pak post independence from what I read he is possibly the most appreciated man in Pak.

Calling people by names comes naturally to us - even today a large section of ppl in Delhi & N India are loosely referred to as " refugees'. These people have been the most industrious and have possibly contributed to the nation more if not the same as others.

Yes, notwithstanding this ,we do not live in an equal world.

Don't people ever tire of going at each others throats on every issue ?

I found what I reproduced in post #1 very relevant and apt in our context and started this thread in the ( vain ?) hope that we could exchange some sane thoughts.

Someday maybe we shall grow up.

Please count how many people paid their respect to the dead in that thread and how many people who were more worried about calling their worshipping place mosque..reality is brother we both have a long way to protect our minorities ...
