Saab takes important step for Surveillance System to Pakistan
Saab has signed a provisional contract to supply an airborne Surveillance System for Pakistan. A number of outstanding issues remain until a contract will be finalised.

- For a number of years we have been engaged in negotiations with Pakistan for an airborne surveillance system. The system will be used for surveillance, command and control in order to counter the effects of future crises and catastrophes. There are a number of outstanding issues that remain to be resolved until a final contract is in place, says Saab CEO Ã…ke Svensson.

Pakistan has for a long time required an airborne system for continuous surveillance of the air territory, borders and the sea. The surveillance system will, together with existing ground based radars, provide a more detailed picture to be able to conduct rescue operations and to encounter different threats to the country.

In the aftermath of the severe earth quake, the system would have been able to play a significant part in the search and rescue operations and in the logistic support. The airborne surveillance system includes Saab 2000 turboprop aircraft equipped with Ericsson Microwave Systems airborne radar system ERIEYEâ„¢.

Saab says Pakistan deal worth over $1bn

Defence group Saab said on Wednesday a previously announced order from Pakistan for an airborne surveillance system was worth more than 8bn crowns ($1bn), with Ericsson having one third of it.

Saab announced the order on Tuesday and its shares closed 3.28 per cent higher at 141.50 crowns on Wednesday although the wider market was down.

“Important conditions remain to be settled before the contract becomes effective,� Saab said in its latest statement.

“Because of speculation about the order value we would like to make clear that the contract value is 8.3bn crowns, with two thirds for Saab and one third for Ericsson Microwave Systems,� it added.

The system includes Saab 2000 turboprop aircraft equipped with airborne radar from Ericsson.

Its an AWAC i guess, but not Erieye. We are getting some airborne radar Ericsson to be equipped on Saab 2000 like we all knew that Pakistan would choose this type of aircraft for any airborne early warning system.

Sweden’s Saab and Ericsson have signed a contract with Pakistan for an emergency land surveillance system.

It comes after the earthquake in Kashmir earlier this month which left over 47,000 people dead and 67,000 injured.

In a statement Saab says the system could help search and rescue operations in the aftermath of a severe earthquake and be used together with ground-based radars �to provide a more detailed picture� to assist rescue efforts and help Pakistan face �different threats to the country�.

Well it doesn't look like an AWAC probably like a special airborne radar system which will provide help during the relief efforts, but i doubt we will be getting it soon.

Saab and Ericsson in Pakistan surveillance deal
Pakistan has signed a contract with two Swedish companies for a land surveillance system that could have been useful in emergency operations arising from the earthquake in Kashmir, the aircraft maker Saab announced on Wednesday.

The system operates aboard a Saab 2000 turbo-propelled aircraft, relying on the Erieye on-board radar system developed by Ericsson Microwave Systems, a subsidiary of the telecom giant Ericsson, a news release stated.

Saab will receive two thirds of the 8.3 million Swedish kronor (878 million-euro, one-billion-dollar) contract and Ericsson will get the other third.

Saab said the surveillance system would be used together with ground-based radars "to provide a more detailed picture" to assist rescue operations and help Pakistan face "different threats to the country".

"In the aftermath of the severe earthquake, the system would have been able to play a significant part in the search and rescue operations" and in logistical support, the statement read.

Saab added that "important conditions remain to be settled" before the contract becomes effective.

The number of Saab 2000 aircraft in the contract was not specified by Saab but the popular Swedish daily Aftonbladet put the total at six.

The earthquake in Kashmir on October 8 caused the deaths of 47,700 people and injured 67,000, according to the latest toll announced Wednesday by the military head of emergency operations, General Farooq Ahmad Khan.

London: Pakistan is finalising a one billion dollar defence deal with a Swedish firm for delivery of Airborne Early Warning (AEW) surveillance system. Pakistan, which is struggling to provide aid to survivors in all of its quake-hit areas, moved a step closer to adopting a Saab-Ericcson AEW system after signing a provisional contract, which envisages replacing of F-27 Fokker planes from the Pakistan Air Force.

This was announced by the Swedish company on October 18, 10 days after the killer quake struck Pakistan and ******************-Kashmir (***),. The deal was believed to be for seven aircraft but a final step had to be taken as the company was going to seek a final nod from the US.

The contract is worth one billion dollars with two-third going to Saab company for providing Turboprop aircraft and the rest to Ericcson which would be providing Erieye airborne radar. Pakistan To Purchase Gripen Jets From Sweden
ISLAMABAD (June 15, 2004): Pakistan is acquiring State-of-the-art high-tech front role JAS-Gripen Planes for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) from Sweden. The planes on their induction in the PAF would help restore the balance in air defence over the South Asian skies especially between Pakistan and India. The Gripens are far superior especially between Pakistan and India. The Gripens are far superior than Mig-27, Mig-29, Mig-31 and Mairage-2000, the front role Indian fighters planes.

Well-placed defense sources told The News here on Monday that President General Pervez Musharraf is visiting three important Scandinavian countries next month including Sweden and it is expected that the deal for purchase of the Gripens would come up for discussion. The president will also visit Denmark and Norway in the same trip.

The sources said that Pakistan is going for JAS-39 version of the Gripen planes, considered to be far more effective than US F-16s, the only front role state-of-the-art planes the PAF is relying and the mainstay of the Pakistan Air Force for any eventuality. The overhauling and maintenance technology of these planes will also be transferred to Pakistan by Sweden once the deal is struck, the sources said.

Pakistan has decided to acquire the Gripens after finding difficulties in getting US made F-16s. Islamabad has also studied French-made Rafael and upcoming European planes, Euro fighters. However, it was decided to go into a deal for the Gripens.

Pakistan is expecting to induct JF-17 Thunder in the PAF in early 2007 but the Gripens would be available much before that, the sources said. The PAF is in dire need of high-tech planes. The Gripens will adequately fulfil this need, the sources said. Pakistan could not have any high-tech plane after acquiring F-16s some 20 years ago.

The JF-17 Thunder will be framed close to the F-16s while the Gripens will be Delta wing planes resembling with French made Mairage-2000 and will be all weather capability planes with multi-role of fighting, bombing and reconnaissance. The supersonic Gripens will be flying with mach-2plus speed, beating in speed all its contemporaries, the sources said.

The single seat fighter-attacker-reconnaissance Gripen is heads up and down display (hudd) that replaces normal flight instruments. Its excellence has already proven and with Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) and navigation system, the Gripen is considered to be the current century&#39;s plane in true sense, the sources added.

The sources said that Sweden is prepared to supply the planes according to the requirement of Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar visited Sweden last month and discussed with the authorities in Stockholm schedule of the visit of the presidnet. Both the capitals are engaged in finalising the dates for the visit. It is expected that Lt Gen (Retd) Hamid Nawaz, secretary defense would also be part of the entourage of the president, the sources added.
