Default Will PAF change the Future MIX of its Fleet

Up until today PAF future fighter fleet mix fleet was as follows so we are led to believe.

    50 Thunders block 1 by 2012
100 + Thunders block 2 (western radar and weapons) 2013-2017
    36 FC20 (J10B) 2015

    18 + 14 MORE F16/ 52 2010-2011. = 32

THATS 218 NEW FIGHTERS FOR PAF BY 2017

Thunder will account for 70% of the new fleet.

    __________________________________________________

In light of India,s decision to increase the SU30MKI to 272 BY the same time frame (they have 124 already)

AND stil order 126 MMRCA probable F18S/H or euro canards BY 2012-2020

    And only 40 TEJAS MK1 2011-2014

SHOULD PAF change the mix to different amounts ie

    30% each

    ie 70+ F16/52
    70+ FC20
    70 + Thunder

Or stick to Thunder with more advanced block 2 upgrade then intially planned

i think we should evaluate J-10 extensively on one hand, and on the other, order something like ~70 J-11B (the multirole chinese version of Su-27. that would surely boost our capabilities, atleast untill ~2020 when a stealth chinese aircraft is ready to be deployed in Pakistan in response to a possible PAK-FA in india.

As long as we got the nuke capable ballistic and cruise missiles there is not much to worry about. Now the issue with Pakistan is the kitty... Weapons cost money simple as that. Pakistan must concentrate on building its economy and investing in quality education and health first.

IMHO PAF won't change its mind regarding the number of the fleet much. However the quality of the fleet with full BVR integration in all the types of air crafts along with continual upgradation of avionics, radar etc. can be expected.

Further, Pakistan must concentrate on building UCAVs. We already are good at building UAVs I suppose.

Apart from it all, PAF is always full of surprises for us all, so only time can tell.

    Just my 2 cents.

no doubt we need a strong economy, but in the current scenario that isn't likely to happen (unless you call Zardari's wealth the Pakistani Kitty).

I believe we need a revolution to bring up honest, dedicated, devoted and patriots as our leaders and I believe such a revolution for Pakistan now will inevitably be bloody........ anyway, we do sure need a strong economy to help build a strong (both in quality and numbers) military.

Yes India is increasing its number of SUs and in my opinion thats why Pakistan is increasing its f-16 fleet as well. For future mix alot will depend on FC-20. If current trends are any guide it would be an excellent jet. It hopefully would be able to counter both the SH and Su-30 in both quality and quantity. While our jf-17s will provide the second tier to counter anything else that India throws at us.

As far I know(I read it in another Thread), the US will retire some F-16C/D from USAF Invertory. PAF should aquire 30 - 40 Aircraft and Upgrade them in Turkey.

China new surprise Jet will be 2 fold.

First the improved J10 or for PAF FC20 which i have to admit looks really hitech in appearance,,, alot like the euro typhoon fighter. NOT SURE re THE weapons and avionics are up too european standards though

The 2nd will be CHINA,s answer to PAK FA. I do however feel their JXX is along away away from flight testing let alone ioc.

If i was PAF though ....to engage and give PAF a good shout at least contesting Pak air space defo more F16/52s with american missles is the key...

There will be plenty opportunity to acquire these as long as usa/pak WOT engagement persists...

150+ is needed now at least

This year we will get our 18 block 52s and hopefully next year another 14 to 18. After that we should press America for more second hand F-16s which can be MLUed and added to air force. That should give us a total fleet of 100 jets.
Now if we look at the Afghan conflict the US is going to save its loses and run, most probably by 2014-15. In this situation we should refrain from buying any new jets, so as to avoid disappointment if we get sanctioned, once they leave.
Also by that time FC-20 would be ready and could be inducted.

barring a dramatic change in its doctrine, the PAF plans are all set for the near to medium term 2011-2015.

    they would ideally like.....

    100 F-16s of a combined A/B and C/D configuration.
150 JF-17s ideally with western avionic suite and BVR capability.
40 FC-20 also with weatern avionics and BVR.

ideally all the above should be able to fire the AIM-120C5 and the Sidewinder AAM.

our budget constraints dont allow us to look beyond these ~300 front-line fighters.

our 2nd line of defence would comprise....

50 Mirage with the ROSE for tactical attack/sea attack.
    50 F-7PG for point defence.
    TaimiKhan and Stealth thanked this.

Well our ideal goal should be

    a) By 2015
Air Defence batteries 10-15 of them
Some what capable as S-300 series likely chinese variants
    Long Range

    SPADA
    Mid range defence

    b) By 2015

    300 JF17 Thunders

    70 Block A (Chinese Avionics)
    70 Block B (Pakistani & Chinese Avionics)
160 Block C (Chinese AESA based work)

    100 J10B
    With AESA radars

    100 F16 C/D level

    100 Combination of Mirage & F-7PG

    10 AWACS

If we have this fighting force we are in good shape defensively

Around 2016 ** if we can't have 100 F16C/D then we must get rafale
If possible we should get 36 Rafale and retire more mirages

Pakistan should acquire as many F-16 block 50/52 as possible with a keen eye to persistently convince the U.S. to sell them F-16 Block 60.

The Chinese fighter jets are not combat proven while the F-16 has endured 30+ years of testing, warfare all the errors and fallacies of the F-16 are known. The same cannot be said with Chinese jets.

I'm not saying that Pakistan should lose sight of Chinese jets just focus more on U.S. jets.

F-16 Block 60 would be far too expensive. I see pakistan going for 4.5 gen fighters far after they induct their JF-17s J-10s etc. More F-16s would be the right choice over JF-17s but Pakistan can't be certain it can acquire more. JF-17 is a guaranteed aircraft and is going to be the main aircraft of PAF. J-10Bs would be another higher end aircraft like the F-16. After all those come into service some time would have to pass due to budget imo before 4.5 gen aircraft come into play.
