Default Army aviation deploy choppers to congo peace mission

Pakistani Aviation Contingent to Participate in Peacekeeping Mission in Democratic Republic Congo (DRC)

On 31 Dec 11, Pak Aviation-1 Contingent comprising three Puma helicopters arrived at KAVUMU Air Terminal, Bukavu, Congo. The helicopters had initially arrived in Entebbe, Uganda and after necessary fitments and test flights they flew to KAVUMU in South Kivu Brigade (SKB) Area of responsibility. Remaining strength of the contingent is expected to arrive within this month. A graceful welcome ceremony was organized at the air terminal to receive the contingent. This is the first Pakistani Aviation Contingent to participate in peacekeeping mission in Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) which reflects the commitment and dedication of Pakistan towards UN and the Congolese Government in bringing peace to this country. Puma helicopters are a valuable addition in MONUSCO military air assets and will help providing better assistance to the UN staff in carrying out their tasks.

We cannot dispense with our choppers due to Operational requirement, has to be UN fleet IMO.

that cant be right while considering the fact that we received additional Pumas a few years back from one of the gulf nations. either from UAE or Qatar

Thirty Two Pumas were bought or transferred to Pakistan. I could only trace 13 serial numbers. I am trying to locate the other numbers.

BTW, PA bought 30 Pumas from France. I am not sure how many went to the boneyard due to attrition, but it seems only four ot six were bought or transferred from UAE.

Wiki gave the number as 60! I am not sure about this number either. But the inital 30 from France are confirmed.

The heliocopters gone on UN missions are of PAA on most occassions, and flown by PAA pilots, but the expenses are paid by UN. My father went to a Sierra Leone mission with the Mi-17, and that is what i could gather from what he said.

Painted in UN colours as well, saw a white coloured heli sometimes back, a Mi-17 in Isl.

    That was PAA as well.

I'm sorry, (and I mean this in the least offensive way possible, believe me) does Pakistan, given the state she is in, have any business deploying such assets abroad to help bring peace when that isn't even present at home? It seems like an odd decision to me motivated by trying to bring prestige to the nation.

Again, a valid question which I think many will have when reading such news.

There is not a war going on here is there? That we are running short of helos.

The Helicopters on UN duty are fueled by the UN as well i think (somebody can prove me wrong) and also, Pakistan gets money in return for its services to the UN missions.
