Shahbaz appreciates army, Gen Kayani’s role in Swat operation

MURREE: The Pakistan Army and its chief General Kayani’s role for restoring peace and curbing terrorism is commendable, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said, paying tributes to the martyrs of the Swat operation.

He was talking to reporters after a ceremony organised to honour female position holders from the Bahawalpur, Multan, Sargodha and Faisalabad boards. He said it was the civilian government’s responsibility to ensure normalcy in the conflict-hit areas and rehabilitate the victims. Shahbaz said education was the only tool for a nation’s progress and development. He said 20 position holders had been sent to Germany and England for study tours and 50 more would be sent abroad on education trips this year.

To a question, the CM said an educational endowment fund had already been set up with an initial amount of Rs 4 billion that would be increased to Rs 10 billion in the next 10 years to provide education facilities to deserving students. Shahbaz said an independent judiciary, quality education, and health were areas of special attention for the Punjab government. He said special status would be given to teachers in Punjab so they could utilise their efforts to raise educational standard in the province. Shahbaz also stressed the need for vocational education for students who could not receive higher education.

US naval official meets COAS and naval chief

ISLAMABAD: US Naval Operations Chief Admiral Gary Roughead called on Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani on Thursday at the General Headquarters. The visiting dignitary remained with Gen Kayani for some time and discussed matters of professional interest. Separately, Roughead also visited naval chief Admiral Noman Bashir and discussed matters of mutual interest. A Pakistan Navy (PN) statement read the US official would also visit the PN units in Karachi.

Pakistan Chief of Army Staff in list of "50 People Who Matter Today"

Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Ashfaq Kayani has been ranked higher than Pope Benedict XVI and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown in a list published by a British political magazine, which highlights 50 individuals who have been instrumental in having an impact in today's scenario around the world.

New Statesman's list of "50 People Who Matter Today", has the Obamas as the most influential people in the world, while Kayani has been ranked at 24th position, way ahead of the Pope or Brown, The Daily Times reports.

According to the magazine, Kayani and his troops remain the dominant power in Pakistan, which has been fighting terrorism and the Taliban in parts of the country.

The magazine also highlighted that Kayani's a low profile and his ability to stay away from meddling in politics has been a significant factor for him making it to the list.

However, it adds, "given how many army chiefs have become president, he may not keep a low profile for long". (ANI)

ISLAMABAD: China’s Ambassador to Pakistan Luo Zhaohui and a delegation of French senators separately called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani at the General Headquarters on Wednesday. The visiting dignitary and the COAS discussed matters of mutual interest. According to the channel, Shahbaz travelled to Punjab House, Islamabad on Thursday night, where Chaudhry Nisar met him. Both Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders then visited General Kayani at Army House, it added. However, military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas has neither confirmed nor denied the meeting, the channel reported, adding PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal has denied that Shahbaz was in Rawalpindi on Thursday night. Airport records, meanwhile, state that Shahbaz was in Rawalpindi on Thursday night, the channel added.

If COAS no want Kerry-Lugar Bill, then COAS no get Kerry-Lugar Bill. That's it. Let's hope he isn't convinced otherwise. Recently, as reported above, he's being "called on" a lot by people who have no business "calling on" the COAS of another country.

In my opinion,

CM meets with COAS to ensure that there remains no communication gap between his govt and army, i think PML(N) is politically moving ahead in close consultation with the army, and its the army which has held them back from going into long marches and rally for the best interest of pakistan.

because pakistan in the prevailing circumstances can't afford such political turmoil, when its army is fighting a war with enemies inside and outside the country simultaneously...

Kayani discusses Waziristan with Hoti, Raisani

LAHORE: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani met NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti and Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Khan Raisani in Islamabad on Friday, a private TV channel has reported.

It said military sources confirmed the meeting, adding it was held to inform both chief ministers of the expected military operation in Waziristan. The sources told the channel the military was ready to launch an operation and was waiting for executive orders from higher authorities. They said the COAS had taken the chief ministers into confidence to ward off complaints from the provincial government with regards to the operation.

The sources added that no political discussion had taken place during the meetings.
