Default Pakistan is Russia’s ‘most important’ partner in South Asia: Putin

Pak is Russia’s ‘most important’ partner in South Asia: Putin

Moscow: Pakistan is Russia’s “most important” partner in South Asia and in the Islamic world, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Monday during a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart in St Petersburg.

“Pakistan today is not an important trade and economic partner of Russia, but also most important Russian partner in South Asia and in the Islamic world,” Putin was quoted as saying at his meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani.

The two met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) prime-ministerial meet in St Petersburg, ITAR-TASS reported.

Welcoming Gilani, Putin said he was happy to see him in Russia and his hometown St Petersburg, though he had met him earlier in other countries.

He also confirmed Moscow’s readiness to invest $500 million on the CASA-1000 electric transmission line to supply Pakistan with the Central Asian power from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

With deterioration of Islamabad’s ties with Washington, Moscow is seeking a closer relationship with India’s arch-rival with the blessing of China — Pakistan’s “all-weather” friend.

This Russian shift in South Asia policy where India had always been Moscow’s main partner is reflection of apprehensions over New Delhi-Washington relationship turning into a military-political alliance to block Russia and China’s interests in the region.

Moscow also believes that the key to the stability in Russia’s soft belly — Central Asia — is ties with Islamabad, which has the potential of creating mischief along and inside the borders of the former Russian empire.

That is a very heavy statement - if verified - most welcome by Putin.

Putin was just speaking to the gallery ... Russia knows very well the pakistani support and sympathy for Chechnya rebels and other parts of central asia !

For Russia in today's changed scenario and in the future China is the main threat and not USA ! India and Russia will always stay as all weather friends!

    Very Impressive.

Pakistan should strenthen this relation further more, try to talk for expansion of Karakoram highway further into Russia. Pakistan & Russia should understand that both countries lies in Asia & importance of both countries to each other cannot be neglected. I'm hopeful Pakistan will gain full membership in SCO very soon.

jeez, where the hell India came into this scenerio

Atleast spare one thread from your trolling fun.

FYI China & Russia knows very well that both countries have to stay in Asia & both of them understand politics of outsiders. Same thing Pakistan knows & it will be good if these three countries join hands for prosperity & security of Asia.

Well think of Afghan war as a payback after what USSR did with us in 1971 war but still a nice opportunity if true ...

The Hindu : Today's Paper / INTERNATIONAL : Russian power boost for Pakistan, Afghanistan

Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has offered to invest “at least $500 million” in a Central Asian electricity project that will provide energy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Mr. Putin made the offer at a one-day meeting of the Prime Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held in St. Petersburg on Monday.

“Russia is willing to commit at least $500 million into this project,” said Mr. Putin. “We could implement this project in a fairly short time and we propose intensifying work in this direction.”

Under the Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Trade and Transmission Project, CASA 1000, hydropower-rich Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will export 1,000MW of electricity to power-deficit Afghanistan and Pakistan.

CASA-1000 is one of the projects that may be undertaken by a proposed energy club of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

“We support the idea of setting up the SCO energy club,” said Mr. Putin. He added that the decision to form the energy club had been approved.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation comprises six full members — China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, four observer states — India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan, and two dialogue partners — Belarus and Sri Lanka.

    I'm loving this.

    China loves Pakistan.

Russia says Pakistan is their most important partner in South Asia. However When Pakistan joins SCO, this may lead to a regional realignment, basically Pakistan might change it's regional identity to be considered a Central Asian country.

I wonder how Indians will think of that. There are some Indians who never accepted Pakistan's existence!

westerners think Pakistan is a strong country.

USSR is long dead buddy, Pakistan's efforts in Afghanistan helped to make the Soviet Union one of the shortest lived nations in the history of the Earth, from 1922–1991. RIP.

Russia on the other hand, is not the Soviet Union. Russia is a good partner to have.
