Default Sino-Pak manufacturing F-22 Frigate: Memon

    Sino-Pak manufacturing F-22 Frigate: Memon

ISLAMABAD: Terming his visit to China as successful, chairman Senate standing committee on defence and defence production, Senator Nisar A Memon has said that Pakistan and China have jointly started manufacturing of F-22 Frigate that would help boost the defence ties between the two countries.

Talking to newsmen on his return from China here on Thursday, Nisar Memon said production of F-22 Frigate would be another symbol of friendship between China and Pakistan.

He said that total four F-22 Frigates would be manufactured with three in China and one in Pakistan. “Pakistan would get its first shipment of the joint endeavor in 2009,” he added. The ships, he said, would be assisted by one helicopter each, which would be prepared by China and Pakistan.

Senator Nisar Memon said during its visit, the delegation called on Chinese think tank. He said Pakistan and China have joint trade of six billion dollars. The joint defence production, he said, would not only help strengthen defence of the two countries but also promote ties between them.

Default Eight Chinese Frigates for Pakistan

    Eight Chinese Frigates for Pakistan

April 21, 2007: Pakistan has ordered four more frigates from China. There are already four on order, and the first of these will arrive next year, and be known as the Zulfiquar class.

These ships are based on the Chinese Jiangwei II class frigates. The first of the Jiangwei II's entered service in late 1998, followed by three more, and several more are still under construction.

The new order is for an improved version of the Jiangwei II (053H3) already on order. These will be called F-22P. China will build three F22Ps, while the other will be built in Pakistan.

The 342 foot long Jiangwei II displaced 2,400 tons, but the F22P is expected to be a little longer, and heavier, perhaps as much as 3,000 tons.

    The F22P will probably carry anti-ship missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, a 100mm gun, anti-submarine weapons and a helicopter.

Crew will be about 180 sailors, and each ship will cost about close to $200 million. The new American LCS weighs about the same, but has only a third as many sailors in the crew, lots more automation and costs $250 million. All eight of these frigates are to be delivered within six years.

The article is false. Firstly Pakistan only ordered 4 F-22P and has not yet placed additional orders for $150mn U.S. each - not $200mn. Secondly the F-22P has a displacement of about 2500 tons - not 3000. However there are plans of proposing a heavily scaled up frigate based off the F-22P for the PN's next-generation frigate requirement.

Pakistan has asked the US to supply it with six Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates to augment its fleet of surface ships, the chief of Pakistan's naval staff Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir has revealed to Jane's. Meanwhile, Pakistan is seeking to progress the delivery of four Chinese Type F-22P or 'Jiangwei II' (Type-053H3) frigates ordered in April 2005, and to decide on the purchase of another four frigates of a still-undefined type, he says.

Seems to me there will be further changes in the F-22p frigate and it is a long term plan to mature the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works. Building one frigate is probably nothing to them knowing that they will need huge assitance with it.

I think manufacturing that one F-22P would give KSEW or rather the Pakistani shipbuilding industry a practice or warm-up run. The PN is planning to procure 4 new frigates and intends to have at least two of them built in Pakistan. From what the PN disclosed about the new frigate project, it is pretty clear that these will be larger, better, more advanced and more sophisticated than the F-22P.

In the 2010s Pakistan will be building:
    • At least 3 Milgem Class Corvettes
    • At least 2 "New Class" Frigates
    • At least 3 U-214 Submarines
    • Maybe 2-3 additional Agosta-90B Submarines
    • That 1 F-22P Frigate
    • Fast Attack Crafts

So would the naval experts amongst us regard this as an increase in capability (the numbers including the OHP's) or simply "maintenance"

I have always wondered why Destroyers never make it to the PNs list. What do the destroyers offer that larger frigates cannot offer? Nevermind that frigates are much more cheaper to maintain.
