Pakistan to deploy troops along Afghan border

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Army has decided to deploy regular troops at the border with Afghanistan to stop cross-border attacks by afghan-based militants, Express 24/7 reported on Tuesday.

The troops will be deployed along the border with Dir and Chitral. The decision was confirmed by DG ISPR Major General Athar Abbas.

So far the number of troops to be deployed and the duration of deployment is not known.

The border where troops had been deployed has seen attacks from militants based in Afghanistan’s Kunar province.

The border posts are currently manned by paramilitary troops.

As reported earlier, in late August, hundreds of Pakistani Taliban fighters mounted pre-dawn raids on paramilitary posts in Chitral district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa after crossing over from their sanctuary in northeastern Afghanistan, officials said.

At least 28 security personnel were killed in the attack, according to District Coordination Officer (DCO) Rehmatullah Wazir.

Also, Taliban militants in Afghanistan have kidnapped more than 30 Pakistani boys who inadvertently strayed across the border. The group of boys, aged between 12 and 18, left the Gharkhi area of Bajaur tribal region during Eid holidays.

“The boys inadvertently crossed into Afghanistan on the second day of Eid and were kidnapped by militants,” senior local administration official Syed Nasim told AFP.

A good step but in a long run the longer we are stuck on the western border, the more beneficial it will be for india. So we need to have a contingency plan in place to be better prepared.

I believe they have already worked out their plans and strategy.

In my view it is not beneficial for Indians but perhaps a change of strategy with respect to response to any Indian aggression or perhaps threat perceptions from India had been of different type now.

Overall, i fully support the move and timing.

Right move, PA has covered & secured tribal belt & now to eliminate this threat presence of regular troops will provide better security. Deploying regular troops along Afghan border doesn't mean that army is closing eye from Indian border.

I must say its A very nice move . Threat from Talibanis to pak is increasing day by day and its a only way to respond to it..

Insecurity grows in Chitral after militants torch school


CHITRAL: Security was beefed up in the border areas of Chitral district a day after the militants torched a government school in the valley generating a sense of insecurity among the residents, locals said on Sunday.

They said the militants had pasted a note at a public place threatening to attack sensitive areas, government installations and the security forces.

Panic gripped parts of Chitral valley after the threats. There has been growing uncertainty among the local population following the recent cross-border raid by Afghanistan-based Pakistani militants in which a number of soldiers and policemen were killed.

On Saturday night, a group of eight militants burnt down the school in Arsun valley. Reports suggested that the militants roamed the area for an hour after torching the school before disappearing into the nearby mountains.

There were also rumours about the entry of two would-be suicide bombers in Chitral district. There are reports that a number of militants were hiding in the mountains adjacent to the Drosh and Arandu tehsils.

The militants are reportedly intercepting the communication by the police, who in turn also occasionally intercept the militants conversation with each other. The security forces, the sources said, were deployed at important locations such as Mordeen, Garam Chashma, Bigosht, Ramboor, Bamburet and Boroghel along the border with Afghanistan.
