Islamabad: Has Swat, the principal city of the restive South Waziristan region in Pakistan's northwest, fallen to the Taliban? It would seem so from the editorial in a leading English daily, on Saturday.
"There has been no official announcement, no victory parades or televised addresses by the victorious party, no cheering crowds welcoming the liberators - but Swat, to all intents and purposes, has fallen to the Taliban," The News said in an editorial headlined "The fall of Swat." It’s unsafe to travel to Pak: India tells citizens "It is the announcement that all girls’ education in the valley will cease from January 15 that is the tipping point," the editorial added. All schools that teach girls have been ordered by the Taliban to close by that date or face the inevitable consequences - being blown up being the most usual of these. They have already blown up well over a hundred girls’ schools, principally those operated by the government, but have moved in recent weeks to blowing up private institutions as well. 2008 a year of turbulence, strife for Pakistan "Female education has virtually ceased anyway, and the Taliban announcement merely puts the seal on what is a manifest reality - the government has lost the battle for Swat and the Taliban have won," the editorial said. "They operate at will, go where they like, issue orders and proclamations that a terrified public are unable to ignore and broadcast their message of obscurantism on the radio for all to hear - and obey," it added. Noting that the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government had called for assistance, the editorial said: "But little seems to be forthcoming. Refugees stream out of the valley, the operators of private schools try to fight a rearguard action, the tourist trade is dead and buried long ago and the beautiful valley of Swat now enters a time of darkness." |

taliban does not control any city in pakistan yet and never will
although they do have people trying to take over several cities but again that has never happened and never will; the pak army and citizens will never allow it

Will your weapons really help you fight the Talibans.
The handover of swat itself tells that its difficult fight them. Either you have to kill the innocent as well in the region to get rid of taliban or let taliban slowly encroach the whole of Pakistan. Hope the Democratic Pakistan Wins.

Daily Times Monitor
LAHORE: Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Sufi Muhammad, who signed a controversial peace deal with the NWFP government on Monday, said he hated democracy and wanted supremacy of Islam over the entire world. “From the very beginning, I have viewed democracy as a system imposed on us by the infidels. Islam does not allow democracy or elections,” he told Deutsche Presse-Agentur in an interview held a few days before the government accepted his demand of enforcing sharia in the region. “Had the government accepted our demands in 1994, we would have not seen the violence we are seeing today,” he added. Sufi Muhammad’s son-in-law, Mullah Fazlullah, has fostered the violence in the name of Islam. Sufi Muhammad said he was against shedding the blood of Muslims, however, added the government should have talked to the Taliban instead of taking military action. He pledged to work for complete peace in Swat if the government enforces Islamic laws, a demand which has now been met. “I believe the Taliban government formed a complete Islamic state, which was an ideal example for other Muslim countries. Had this government remained intact, it could have led to the establishment of similar Islamic governments in many other countries,” he said. Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan Blue - Self determined democracies Red - Not self determined democracies Someone kindly pass this on to your neighbor and impress upon him that although he hates the Planet he is on, it is generally unadvisable to declare War upon all of it. We can but live in hope that he may come to appreciate his general predicament. |

Does Taliban enjoy the same tribal support in Islamabad/Karachi which is a city and do you think the people who live in Islamabad change their living style and support talibunny.
I agree the fighting or suicide bombing will happen and has continued to happen every where. The stakes of the army is at question. |

The article lost credibility after that. ![]() South Waziristan is in tribal areas while Swat is a settled area in Malakand Division in NWFP. The writer should have searched a bit before writing. Here is the administrative map of the Pakistan: http://www.mofa.gov.pk/Maps/PAK_Administrative.jpg | |
