    MONITORING DESK

KARACHI (July 23 2006): Retired army officers and leading personalities in a letter to President General Pervez Musharraf have asked him to separate both the offices of President and army chief, Aaj TV reported on Saturday. They also asked him to hold free and fair general elections, as they are essential for the country's integrity.

Those who wrote the letter, a copy of which was also sent to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and leaders of political parties, included former Balochistan governor Lieutenant General Abdul Qadir (Retd), former ISI director-general Lieutenant General Asad Durrani (Retd), former information minister Javed Jabbar, analyst Dr Hasan Askari, Dr Khalida Ghaus, former governor Moinuddin Haider, senior journalist Mujeebur Rehman, Senator S.M. Zafar, former senator Sirtaj Aziz, Brigadier Shaukat Qadir (Retd), former minister Shah Mehmud Qureshi, former defence secretary General Talat Masood (Retd), former NRB chairman Lieutenant General Tanveer Naqvi (Retd), former minister Shafquat Mehmud, former governor Shahid Hamid, former ISI director-general Lieutenant General Hamid Gul (Retd), Dr Pervez Hasan and Ahmed Bilal Mehmud.

The letter has also been sent to former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif.

It emphasised on adopting a reconciliatory approach on national issues and called for making the Election Commission an independent, powerful body by giving it full autonomy, besides holding of general elections under neutral and impartial interim set-up to make them credible.

Terming the President's office constitutional and political one, they suggested of separating it from the army chief's office. They opined that combining of the two posts politicises the VOAS post as well as the Army.

The letter also urged upon the political parties to respond positively to any talks offer for making the next general elections free and fair.

As if Musharraf could care less for such letters!

If he were to give up any of the two, he would have done it much earlier.

These letters are merely political ploys with the eye on the elections that will take place when due.

    Musharraf knows his onions.

Given the politics of Pakistan, if he were to shed his uniform, then whatever progress Pakistan has made would not be made. He is possibly the best bet for Pakistan with his uniform on.

Musharraf has done much better than BB and NS, And at the moment his two offices need to be entact.
We have leadership crises and i dont see anyone at the moment have enough capabilities to replace him.
