ISLAMABAD: Breaking into the high-security zone of Islamabad International Airport, a terrorist blew himself up after a gun-battle with security personnel here on Tuesday night.
Security personnel blocked the terrorist from entering the passengers’ lounge and averted a disaster. Three officials of the Airport Security Force (ASF) and Elite Force of the police were wounded critically.
Talking to journalists, ASF Director-General Brigadier Fayyaz Ahmad said that at about 9.15pm, a car-riding terrorist, sitting on the backseat, started running towards the passengers’ lounge after firing at ASF officials who were searching his vehicle. Later, he blew himself up with a hand-grenade after sustaining bullet wounds when security personnel blocked his way to the passengers’ lounge and tried to overpower him. He said two ASF officials were wounded in the shootout.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Rawalpindi Range) Syed Moravet Ali Shah, responding to questions of journalists, said that when the terrorist entered the parking lot in a car, he started firing at security personnel. The security officials retaliated and wounded him.
ASF Sub-Inspector Zulfiqar Ali Sumbal, 45, and Constable Abdullah Yousafzai, 25, were rushed to the Rawalpindi General Hospital (RGH), while ASI Muhammad Adnan of the Rawalpindi police was admitted to the Military Hospital (MH).
Hospital sources said Zulfiqar was in critical condition. The other two were stated to be out of danger. The personnel of a sensitive agency have taken the driver of the car in which the alleged terrorist came to the airport to an undisclosed location for interrogation, sources said.
The army has taken control of the airport, while the police and paramilitary forces have cordoned off the area. The airport has been closed for all types of traffic.
Sensitive agencies have taken the dead body into their custody for medical examination, sources said, while the upper part of his body remained undamaged and his face could be identified easily.
