Default PPP will play important role in presidential election: Rasheed

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed has said that President Pervez Musharraf will be reelected by the sitting assemblies and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will play important role in the presidential election.

He stated this while addressing a press conference here on Saturday. PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto will not return to Pakistan before forthcoming general elections, he said.

When former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will return, he will be sent back to Saudi Arabia, he added.

PPP will back Musharraf in polls: Rashid

    21 May 2007

LAHORE — The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will support President General Pervez Musharraf in the forthcoming presidential election and PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto will not return to Pakistan before the general elections, Federal Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed says.

Talking to reporters at Pakistan Railways headquarters here, Ahmed said the PPP would show its ‘real face’ during the presidential election as it would openly support President Musharraf.

Asked if he would consider contesting the forthcoming general elections on a PPP ticket, the minister said that he was a born ‘Muslim Leaguer’ and would never contest the election from any other party platform.

Commenting on reports that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was considering parting ways with the government, Ahmed said the MQM would remain a partner in the ruling coalition. Ahmed rejected the opposition’s threat to resign from the assemblies if President Musharraf was re-elected in September, saying the opposition parties would not resign because they would never want to give up their benefits as assembly members. On the Jamia Hafsa and Lal Masjid issue, Ahmed said the clerics of both institutions would be dealt with sternly if they did not stop violating the law.
