Default Police arrest PPI president, 25 others

Monday, August 27, 2007
By Salis bin Perwaiz

Karachi

After the latest bout of clashes at the Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC), in which an activist of Islami Jamiat Taliba (IJT), the Capital City Police led a crackdown and rounded-up 25 suspects allegedly involved in the incident, including Central President of the Punjabi-Pukhtoon Ittehad (PPI).

The Capital City Police led a crackdown on anti-social elements, conducting raids at various parts of the city, after strict orders from CCPO, Karachi, Azhar Ali Farooqi. In total, about 25 suspects were held, including the Central President of the PPI Mazhar Iqbal, who was arrested after a raid in Golden Town, Shah Faisal Town police limits.

When contacted, the CCPO said that the suspects were rounded-up and further action will be decided after thorough interrogation and investigation of cases regarding Saturday’s violence at the JPMC.

Farooqi added that if, after investigation, it is discovered that there is no conclusive evidence to prove their involvement, the suspects will be set free under the provision of the law. He maintained that after the black day call by the IJT for Monday (today) the Rangers have been put on alert and will be present to ensure that no law and order situation breaks out.

Farooqi advised the students

to not take the law in their

own hands, warning that if they do, they will be handled according to law.

On Saturday, the clash at the JMPC, within Sadar police limits, between the two student organizations, IJT and PSA, claimed life of Farhan Ahmed a first-year student of MBBS (Physiotherapy Department). Ahmed was shot dead while four other activists were injured. The fallout after the incident was potent with activists protesting, acting aggressively towards the law-enforcers present there and also blocking main Sharae Faisal.

The Capital City Police Officer Azhar Ali Farooqi, while taking the issue seriously, took up the failure by the Investigation Police to make arrests in the previous four cases (pertaining to August 15) which have been registered against the groups’ activists at the Sadar police station.

He also ordered the SPO’s to check the progress of the investigations and arrest all accused and submit a report to his office as soon as possible.
