Anti-headscarf Adana school principal suspended

In the meantime, yet another headscarved student at a university in İzmir faced discrimination when her professor asked her to leave the final exam she was taking.

A school principal who discriminated against headscarved students, including the top student in the school, due to their headscarves at their graduation ceremony in Adana was suspended on Thursday.

The top student, Tuğba Demir, was banned from coming to the podium to receive her award because she wears a headscarf, while three other headscarved students were ordered by the school's principal, Ayla Avşar, to sit at the back of the hall while the graduation ceremony took place.

The incident happened at the Adana İhsan Sabancı Girls' High School earlier this week. An investigation was launched into the incident following an order from Adana Governor Hüseyin Avni Coş, as a result of which Avşar was suspended. Adana Provincial Education Director Mehmet Ali Selamet confirmed the suspension of the school's principal, adding an inspector had been commissioned to investigate the incident further.

In the meantime, yet another headscarved student at a university in İzmir faced discrimination when her professor asked her to leave the final exam she was taking. Zeynep Çebi, a third-year student in the department of philosophy of the Aegean University in İzmir, was forced to leave the classroom by Professor Sabri Sürgevil as she was taking a final exam.

Çebi said she took the “history of civilization” course offered by Sürgevil as an elective. “I was taking the final exam. The professor came and said it was impossible for me to take the exam in such a way [while wearing a headscarf]. He yanked the exam paper from in front of me. I had to leave the classroom,” Çebi said.

Two male students also left the classroom in protest of the actions of the professor.

Abdullah Sidar and Yusuf Gezer said they also left the classroom in a show of support for Çebi. Until 2010, headscarved students were not able to attend university due to a strict ban on the use of headscarves.

The ban was eased by a circular sent to universities by the Higher Education Board (YÖK). However, some university administrations and lecturers still refuse to allow headscarved students to attend university.

These "university professors" are there to do politics. They don't know a sheet about their field of expertise one bit. Look at how much Turkey lacks in education thanks to these so-called"profs". We need to get rid of these idiots and pursue education and not politics in the sphere of education. Every damn institution is politicized. Education, military, courts, business. Mate, could it be that Ataturk's dream was hijacked into something else and so it would be wrong to blame 'Kemalism' per se ? I mean over here in Pakistan, Jinnah's dream of a Nation where everyone would have a right to express themselves (even political Islam) and yet no one group could have 'special rights or privileges', was hijacked by the religious clergy, the feudals, the politicians and the Military Dictators to create a Pakistan that Jinnah would have difficulty recognizing !

I'm against each form of discrimination, whether its a headscarf or something else. But I'm against headscarfs on girl who are not old enough to decide whether they want it or not. I guess in this case she was old enough since she was graduating.

I've seen girls wearing headscarfs who were 9-10 and I think that headscarf bans should be in effect in public buildings (schools)until they're old enough to decide if they're cool with it or not.

What age? Thats a tough question there mate. Really don't know the answer. I think the right approach to something like that should be somekind of commission with representatives from each demographic group, religious leaders, etc and let them discuss it and come to a conclusion.

What the f*ck is wrong with you man? Preventing womans to wear in accordance with their beliefs is a violation for one of the Ataturk's main principle, secularism. If this new is true, that school principle got what she deserved.

However i'm thinking same with what. Up to some age, this ban should be in effect in order to prevent possible discrimination among children.

An apple is called an apple and people with scumlike characteristics are called scum, just like Bush. I call people who deny women entering universities scum. I call people who deny men gaining ranks in military because his mother wears a headscarf scum. I call people who deny women with veil working or even entering official areas scum. It is not about generalizing, it is about the state of the country since these scum became politicians. So-called professors who is at lookout for women with veil are scum.

And what is the common characteristics of these people? You guessed right, they are all Kemalists, without a single exception. Is that generalization or the truth?

And yes until very recent Turkey was worse than most African countries, during the times of Kemalist scum politicans.
