You can not compare a Tatctical UAV like Caldiran with a strategic MALE UAV like Heron, both are designed for different Purposes. Caldiran as a Tactical UAV can operate in Heights up to 16000 FT, Strategic MALE UAV can reacht Heights up to 30000 FT and carry varios Type of Sensors and COM Equipment. They can be controlled far away from the turkish Mainland by Sattelite Uplink. TIHA MALE UAV which is designed by TAI and will probably enter in Service in 2011 are compareable with Heron.

There is no comparison between 'Caldiran' and Heron. Technologically and in terms of capabilities Heron is way more advanced.

Turkey's 10 Heron (purchased from Israel) use Turkish termal cameras and day-night cameras (ASELFLIR-300). ASELFLIR-300 is made by ASELSAN of Turkey. Also, ASELSAN increased from biggest 93th (2009) to 86th (2010) defence company in the world according to US's Defence News periodical.

By ASELFLIR-300, one can read the watch on arm of a terrorist from 7 kms above.

Turkey's Heron's Problems:
1. Turkey requested 30 000 feet max altitude according to contract. But, Herons did NOT reach to 30 000 feet. Israel side said: "Turkey put ASELFLIR 300 on Heron, and therefore Heron cannot reach to 30000 feet".
2. Turkey's obus (FIRTINA) hit the targets that Herons showed 500m-1 km falsely. Turkey's obus (FIRTINA) hit the targets that Turkey's own UAV (Bayraktar and Gözc&#252 showed 100% precisely and correctly.

SO: These 2 errata of Herons are whether due to "Software meddling (interference to software code)" or "Physical incomptence really" is still known really.

Turkey will NOT buy any more Herons after June 2010. Turkey built TIHA UAV. TIHA UAV (loaded with ASELFLIR) can easily reach to 30 000 feet! TIHA-B UAV will have Turkish Cirit missiles (with fire and forget capacity). Cirit proved superiority to US's Hellfire and Israel's Spike on early 2010 (January 12th 2010: Roketsan's Cirit is the first laser guided 2.75" rockets to engage moving targets. Cirit successfully engaged a moving target travelling at 60 km/h while the platform (AH-1W Cobra) it was fired from was moving at 120 knots (222 km/h).).

Also, Baykar's ÇALDIRAN said "We can pass Heron completely with the same electronics and avionics with a bigger vehicle. Turkish Army requested us a vehicle with 22 000 feet. If Turkish Army had said more altitude, we would have produced that as well".

Already, ÇALDIRAN's has some features that Herons do NOT have: For example:

They do but not the advanced version we operate.

Turkey purchased 10 Herons from Israel, but Turkey put Turkish-made termal camera and day-night camera (ASELFLIR-300) over Heron.

Heron canNOT reach to 30 000 feet with high quality termal and day-night cameras due to payload problem. Therefore, Heron can be shut down with Short Range Missiles!

TIHA can reach to 30 000 feet with high quality termal and day-night cameras (for example ASELFLIR-300). Therefore, TIHA canNOT be shut down with Short Range Missiles!

Also, with ASELFLIR-300, one can read the time on watch on arm of a terrorist from 7 kms above!

Israel has delivered 50+ Herons to India since 2005. Another batch of deliveries to the IN has commenced. The first batch of Naval herons are operational. The IA is fixing a deal for the IAI Hunter UAVs, which have Viper Strike.

Really? what a dubious statement!! Turkish TIHA UAV didnt even had maiden flight yet, while heron family have a vast operational experience of tens of thousand mission hours worldwide...

* Israeli designed UAVs were most extensively used by US in 1991, 1999 and 2003 wars.
