India third biggest CO2 emitter in world; NTPC tops list

MIAMI: India is the third biggest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, with state-owned NTPC topping the list of companies belching the deadly gas, according to new data released by a Washington-based think tank which has advocated an "energy revolution" in the country based on solar power.
The Centre for Global Development (CGD) said that India figures at the third position in the list of biggest CO2 emitters through power generation after China and the United States.

When contacted, NTPC officials said in Delhi, "We are among the most efficient producers of power using fossil fuels. NTPC is the second best in the world, emitting only 800 grams of CO2 per kwh of electricity generation."
Out of 638,000,000 tons of CO2 emission by India every year, NTPC alone contributes for 186,000,000 tons which constitutes about 30 per cent of the total gas release, the data revealed and Talcher power plant in Orissa operated by the company has the notoriety of emitting the biggest quantity of CO2.

As many as 16 power plants, operated by NTPC, one of the Navratna companies of India, are in CGD's "Red Alert" category for spewing out the deadly gas in the country.

The findings, part of a recent report by CGD on "China surpassing the US as the world's biggest emitter of CO2 from power generation", also name Russia, Germany, Japan, UK, Australia, South Africa, and South Korea among the world's top-ten power sector emitter in absolute terms.

This shows why nuke deal is important for india.becuse this is only the beginning as india will develop it will need lot of electricity and if nuke deal doesn’t go through it will heavily depend on the coal power plants.

The report said US and China are top on emission of CO2 so by your logic Russia, Germany, Japan, UK, Australia, South Africa, and South Korea among the world's top-ten power sector emitter in absolute terms should also need such nuke deals

They won't need ' such' nuke deals as most of them are already members of club.

What they definitely need is alternate sources of energy ( the non emitting kind) , In the case of India, the nuke deal appears to be best suited for the immediate & medium term.

Nuclear power plants are not carbon neutral as to build on in the first place will release a lot of emissions.

Furthermore the problem of radioactive waste is a significant problem.

JK had explained the emission thing.

Now coming towards your argument that this deal will decreas use of coal by India for energy well i dont think nor others will think that India will abonded the use of coal for power generating.

Its a lame excuse.

rightly said JK the deal is not about power as it is frequently told, yes power generation is a part of it, but more to do with allowance of dual use items which are till now not getting exported to india. But any way deal seems to be dead.

When I visited Hinkley point B on a field trip I was told most radioactive waste wasn't spent fuel but items like gloves and overalls for the workers.

I was also told that Pakistani and Indian nuclear power facilities had a good track record
