Default India removed from WHO list of polio nations

NEW DELHI: India marked a major success in its battle against polio Saturday by being removed from the World Health Organisation’s list of countries plagued by the crippling disease.

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said the WHO removed India from the list after the country passed one year without registering any new cases.

The milestone is a major victory in the global effort to eradicate polio and leaves only three countries with endemic polio —Pakistan, Nigeria and Afghanistan. India must pass another two years without new cases to be declared polio-free.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh praised some 230,000 volunteers who traveled across India to vaccinate children and said India’s success against polio ”shows that teamwork pays.”

”This gives us hope that we can finally eradicate polio not only from India but from the face of the entire mother Earth,” he said at a New Delhi conference on polio Saturday.

He said more work was needed to ensure every Indian child ”has equal access to the best immunisation” as well as to other factors for warding off disease including better sanitation, education, safe drinking water and nutritious food.

”We need to educate our children and our mothers on the importance of hygiene and nutrition to overall good health and longevity,” Singh said.

India’s success in fighting polio has been credited to a partnership between the government, the WHO, UNICEF and Rotary International, whose members have contributed more than $1 billion to the global eradication effort.

Well, the campaign against polio in India was a long and hard fought one.

The hard work paid off eventually.

Now our national focus should shift towards eradication of malnutrition in children.

Malnutrition kills 2 million children in India every year.

Think of a child's face and then think of 2 million i.e. 20 lacs of them dying every year just because they didn't get enough proper food to eat.

That is enough to fill one's heart with sadness.

I think that the rumors that Polio Vaccine causes impotency is the main cause of polio still prevalent. The guy will rot in hell who spread such rumors. Even Indian government faced too much problem in overcoming the effect of rumors and even seeking the help of Ulemas to get rid of this rumors.

we need to work on other field and the most important field is poverty, health, and education. i have some reason why govt. failed in this sector.

Poverty: we have enough welfare programs for poors and enough money but real poors are not getting 10 paise of 1 Rs. bcoz the way of functioning of govt. is very old and they are still working on old method like govt. ration shop. all money is going to pradhans(Village head), ration shop owner and DSO officers. i think UIDAI project is good solution but i don't know why home ministry is opposing this project.

Health: Politician like Mayawati, Mulayam, and Laloo is big problem in Helath program.

Education: Nothing to say about this. we have schools, money, and most imp. that today students are going to school, but only problem is our school teachers. not need to explain just type indian school teachers in youtube.

    its not over,
we are working on the final step,
to monitor and ensure that the polio virus isn't brought back to the nation by any foreign person/cargo/NRI entities.
we need to ensure the lid is sealed.

Its not to start a blame game, but ant-polio infrastructure in Afghanistan is a major source of the reason that polio spread is not being controlled in Pakistan. Since 2010, in Afghanistan 316 districts out of the total 326 were confirmed polio free. But most of the southern and eastern part of the country still carries the virus and hence the polio cases as well. Security concerns for the workers over there have been a major cause of this situation. Pakistan being its next door neighbour faces the full brunt of the situation due to frequent movement involved of the locals. This means chances of its pouring into India as well. Till the time a consolidated effort is not put in by all the stake holders, we might not be ready to celebrate yet.
