Siachen troop withdrawal tops agenda for talks with Pakistan

India has agreed to discuss the sensitive Siachen issue at the June 11-12 secretary-level meeting with Pakistan, pushing the Sir Creek issue – another flashpoint – way down the agenda. Observers say the reason for resetting the priorities is that Siachen being a far more complex issue than Sir Creek, any leeway on that front may give Pakistan the domestic leverage necessary to push ahead with the peace process.

The Siachen glacier is known as the world's highest battlefield where troops have been deployed at elevations of up to 22,000 feet. Sir Creek, a 96 km disputed strip of water in the Rann of Kutch, divides the Kutch region between Gujarat and Sindh province of Pakistan.

Pakistan wants to know how far India will be flexible on the Siachen issue before revealing its cards on Sir Creek. It was at the insistence of Pakistan that the talks on Sir Creek scheduled in May had to be postponed and the new dates have not yet been decided.
Also, New Delhi is deciphering the confusing signals from across the border, including that of the neighbour backing out of signing the new visa agreement at the last moment.

The Siachen troop withdrawal issue gained prominence in Pakistan following a massive avalanche burying a Pakistan army camp in Siachen on April 7, resulting in the death of 129 soldiers and 11 civilians.

Just after the incident, Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari advocated for troop withdrawal from Siachen during his informal meeting with PM Manmohan Singh in April.
The foreign secretary-level meeting is expected to prepare the ground for external affairs minister SM Krishna’s Pakistan tour probably in the third week of July to review the peace process.

It is only possible if Indian Army and RAW will left their ego................peopels and govt. of both coutries want to resolve the issues between two countries............but Indian Army don't want......that's why recently India Army General gave speach against it after what what said by Gen. Kiani......this is also the reason that 1 Million Indian Army is in Kashmir.

    1. Max talibs would have flocked to pdf to post anti us slogans rather than learning to blow themselves up

    2. Max iraqs would have flocked to Iraqi defense sites to mock US occupation

    3. Bosnians would have flocked to serbian defense forums

    and on and on...

whatever some one say here matters zilch in practical world... unless until u r sharing some stats when u can get educated..

If 1 million Indian army is in Kashmir then who is guarding the rest of Indian borders....because the size of the Indian Army is 1.3 million ..........of these 1 million are in Kashmir........the population of Kashmir is 4 million ..........I mean add to that 1 million army then it is pretty crowded over there.......... Madarassa Math ...........I guess

I laugh when i hear pakistan talk about peace in kashmir and Siachen.

Both are more peaceful than say any major city in Pakistan.

Its not about ego. Its about our security and Pakistan's not so good track record. Kargil is in still memories of Indians. Thanks but no thanks. We can afford a status quo

Kashmir has little over 1 lakh troops not 1 million.
My friend Pakistan forces are not on the siachen glacier. Siachen glacier is entirely under the control of Indian armed forces. Every time pakistan says demilitarize siachen it means they want to vacate sal toro ridge and we have to vacate siachen.
Why would India demilitarize siachen when we have total control over it and with latest tech we have managed to reduce the deaths of our brave soldiers.
If pakistan wants to vacate sal toro ridge they are welcome but IA won't demilitarize siachen and give china and pakistan to link up each other.
