Small U.S. Manufacturers Give Up on 'Made in China'

When Sonja Zozula and Jerry Anderson founded LightSaver Technologies in 2009, everyone told them they should make their emergency lights for homeowners in China. After two years of outsourcing to factories there, last winter they shifted production to Carlsbad, Calif., about 30 miles from their home in San Clemente. “It’s probably 30 percent cheaper to manufacture in China,” Anderson says. “But factor in shipping and all the other B.S. that you have to endure. It’s a question of, ‘How do I value my time at three in the morning when I have to talk to China?’ ”

As costs in China rise and owners look closely at the hassles of using factories 12,000 miles and 12 time zones away, many small companies have decided manufacturing overseas isn’t worth the trouble. American production is “increasingly competitive,” says Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative, a group of companies and trade associations trying to bring factory jobs back to the U.S. “In the last two years there’s been a dramatic increase” in the amount of work returning.

No, they won't. China's demographic change will push for higher wages, thus higher manufacturing costs.

labor cost in many other country is much cheaper than the once in current China, but there's no signal observed there's competitive manufacture basement against China.
Frankly, people from India, why you are so cheered when "made in China or made by myself" are the only 2 choices available? you are so proud to obtained the coming title "largest population of the world", why you don't use your labour resource well like we did?
When "made in China" became more expensive, the other side of the coin says we are producing more valuable products, with all respect, I hope some poor people in India can get the chance from the margin we leave.

If cheaper means free.. then yes, else no.

The question is whether the CPC govt is willing to take the subsidies to the next level.

Forget about WTO and governments .... the consumers love it when CPC increases subsidies.

    Why not follow china???

The basic point is we do not want to follow china nor can we?
china is like a giant factory where a bunch of people control everything and run everything - right down to people's lives.

this only hurts their economy in the long run. the poor will be asking for more governmental handouts just like india, it is a worse case scenario. And for cheerleading indians your time for running call centers is winding down!

small and medium sized companies are susceptible to economic downturns same everywhere! they have problems sustaining their long term development esp in hi cost america.

ok, you are perfect, and we are wrong.
maybe we think different and maybe both of us have good cause.
But I do think besides all the default we have, china is rather practical, at least in the way we use recourse and labour.
30-40 years before, the 2 countries are similar poor, well robbed by west. Most of us never consider you as anime, why the 2 old poor countries shall against each other, than the rest of the world? our goal is US, or was USSR,
At present, not everything here is lovely, but the average life is much longer, 74-74.5 years old. India is developing fast too, still we are not prefect, and have a long way to go.

The basic tenets are different in both countries, in China if an infrastructure project gets ordered..it gets done, in India it takes ages, one civil suit filed in court will put the whole project behind by a few years. Workers have unions, they strike work according to their whims, we have around 160-180 holidays in a year apart from the weekly offs. Government staff is not answerable to anybody. Work is taken as granted. Even then we are on a growth trajectory owing to our middle class population.
