Krishna says optimistic about future of India-China ties
External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today said he was very optimistic about the future of the India-China relationship and said both countries should continue to work to further enhance cooperation in all fields and strengthen their strategic and cooperative partnership.
"Talking about our overall bilateral relationship, I am very happy to see the tremendous progress being made," he said while inaugurating an exhibition of Chinese paintings and calligraphy here.
He said leaders of both countries continued to have frequent contacts and bilateral trade and economic relations also had seen rapid development. He said the bilateral trade crossed $ 50 billion last year and China had become one of India's largest trading partners.
The exhibition has put on display the works of more than 30 outstanding artists from China. The inaugural function was followed by a performance by traditional Chinese performing artistes.
The event has been organised by the 21st Century China India Centre for Culture and Communication and the Tata group.
Mr Krishna noted that next year would mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Both countries are planning commemorative activities including the Festival of India in China and Festival of China in India.
"This would again highlight the intimate cultural ties shared by the two countries. This exhibition serves as an excellent precursor for the various celebration activities planned for next year," he said.
The Minister said that India and China, as two ancient civilizations and close neighbors, had a long history of cultural contacts and exchanges.
He said that, in the last 60 years, exchanges in the fields of culture and arts had continued to play a vital role in increasing the mutual understanding between the two peoples.
"An event like this, gives a further push to the people-to-people contacts between the two countries, which has been emphasized as a key component of our relations by leaders from both sides," he said.
Mr Krishna described the exhibition as an excellent example of people's participation in the bilateral relationship and said the Government supported such initiatives.
