Default 8th anniversary of Gujarat genocide. Never forget

Things are not good in Gujarat and its capital of commerce Ahmedabad and Banglore. A few years ago Narendra Modi orchestrated a vile pogrom of bigotry against the Muslims. More than 3000 Muslims were systematically targeted and massacred. More than 400,000 were thrown out the state. They still yearn to return to their villages> Mr. Modi’s henchmen refuse to allow them to return to the homes and property–under threat of death.

In February 2002, Hindu fundamentalists carried out a genocidal ethnic cleansing of Muslims in the state of Gujarat, India. The genocide was conducted in a pre-planned collusion with the police and the BJP state government of Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Between 2,000 and 5,000 Muslims were slaughtered, and more than 150,000 rendered homeless and destitute. Human rights investigators, despite having visited Kosovo and Afghanistan, were unprepared for the horrors they found in Gujarat. To date, the victims have seen no real justice, and the perpetrators continue to boast of Gujarat as a laboratory for the rest of India. With passion and hope, this book documents the Nazi, fascist origins of Hindu fundamentalism; the ongoing propagation of hatred towards Muslims and Christians in the educational system; the continuing economic boycott of Muslims in Gujarat; the legal grounds for prosecuting the BJP leaders for genocide; and the campaign of horrifically violent rape against Muslim women.

The depths of sexual violence in Gujarat demand that the Hindustan of Hindu fundamentalism be renamed as Rapistan. With the rise of Jewish and Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East and Christian fundamentalism in the US, the Gujarat genocide looms large in a scenario of global fundamentalist wars. It is a story that reverberates in every corner of the globe where the wolves of religious fundamentalism howl at the gates of power. How are we to face this juggernaut of religious fascism, manifest in all religions? Prabhat Sarkar’s book is not merely a case study in communalist cleansing, but a Neo-humanistic spark of liberation from the cycle of hatred.

Genocide in Gujarat: A policeman walks past a dead Muslim stabbed in Khanpur slums of Ahmadabad India Wendesday April 24 2002

On Feb. 27th 2002, a train in Gujarat, India was attacked. In the name of that attack (though it is clear the attackers were not Muslims) the Hindu fundamentalists carried out a genocide of Muslims all over Gujarat, India. It had been pre-planned months earlier. Newspapers and cheap literature fanned the hatred of Muslims, whose only crime was to be born as part of the Muslim minority in India which has a Hindu majority. Though women were raped, heinously tortured and burnt, not one Hindi perpetrator has gone to prison for these crimes because the fundamentalist BJP party reigned supreme, both in Delhi and in Gujarat. India is now a “flawed democracy laced with religious fascism – as represented by the Hindutva, the Sangh Parivar and all its branches – the BJP, VHP, and RSS. – Garda Ghista

Hindus do kanyadaan at mass nikaah

VADODARA: When Arun Solanki, a college professor, came to bless Salma Sheikh who was tying the knot at a mass nikaah ceremony on Eid-e-Milad in Godhra, all he knew was that she was a dear friend’s daughter.

The festive day just happened to fall on the eighth anniversary of the Godhra carnage where 59 persons, mainly kar sevaks, were burnt to death in the Sabarmati Express at the railway station here sparking riots that killed nearly 2,000 people.

The mass marriage ceremony was organised by Samagara Muslim Samaj (SMS) for 34 couples with Hindus performing something akin to a kanyadaan for the brides.

But the wedding was minus the biryani! As a mark of respect to the 200 Hindu guests at the wedding, the Muslims decided that the menu would be totally vegetarian. Collectively the guests gave Rs one lakh cash and other gifts.

“Salma is my friend’s daughter. I treat her like my own daughter and came to perform kanyadan and bless the couple. Both our families share a wonderful bond and we often celebrate each other’s festivals together,” said Arun Solanki, a professor at Commerce College in Godhra. He said he was attending a mass nikaah for the first time.

Another guest, Anand Ghadiali, said, “This is a historic event as it will send across the message that Godhra scores high on communal harmony. Many Hindus silently donated for this ceremony and both communities made sure everything went well”.

Social worker Mahendra Thakor feels that these functions will change perception of Godhra. “After 2002 one has not seen any communal tension here and Hindus and Muslims share a strong bond of brotherhood. Today’s event proves it all,” Thakor said.

Committee member of SMS Rafik Tijoriwala is all praise for the help extended by the Hindu community. “I have been holding mass marriage ceremony since 2008 and Hindus have always cooperated. They give gifts, utensils and cash for newly-weds,” said Tijoriwala. “Jayesh Dalwadi paid the registration fee of a needy girl from Anand so that she could get married in the mass marriage function,” Tijoriwala said.

The ahmedabad city's first Muslim woman mayor, Aneesa Mirza, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, received the yatra when it reached the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

The local Muslim MLA, Usmangani Devdiwala, who yesterday presented to the main priest of the Jagdish temple a silver chariot, also greeted the yatra along with hundreds of Muslims.

80 hindu temples demolished for illegal encroachment by Narendra Modi in Gujarat capital gandhinagar

GANDHINAGAR: Before you call Narendra Modi Hindutva's poster-boy, take this. Gujarat's capital, Gandhinagar, has razed to the ground 80 temples or their encroaching boundaries, since authorities began a drive against illegal encroachment in one month.

The campaign, which started on October 13, went into top gear on Wednesday when 15 small and medium temples were demolished on two roads. A lesson, perhaps, for twin-city Ahmedabad's civic authorities who have failed to carry out a Gujarat High Court directive against shrines obstructing movement of traffic in the city.

A team of officials from the Gandhinagar collectorate, police and forest officials participate in the demolition operation. A survey conducted by the Gandhinagar collectorate officials showed 107 temples having illegally come up along the main roads and about 312 in the interior areas of various sectors. All of these will be removed.

Apparently, the first temple was demolished around Diwali and there was not even a protest as the demolition was carried out in the dead of the night. Six temples around Gh-5 circle and adjoining areas vanished within hours.

Two days later, VHP organised a protest rally in Gandhinagar, supported by members of Mahagujarat Janata Party, comprising mainly of BJP rebels. The demolition drive can also be seen in the light of the recent arrest of VHP's Ahmedabad general secretary Ashwin Patel on sedition charges for circulating anti-Modi SMSes. ( Watch )

Gandhinagar collector Sanjeev Kumar says, ``This is part of the ongoing drive in which all encroachments are going to be removed. We will bring down any illegal structure on government land.''

Deliberate Obfuscation. When lies like these are told , they then become an excuse for Hindu bigots to use this and paint the whole episode as being full of "Muslim" deceit.

Not true. Lots of people have been tried and found guilty, some cases have been moved out of Gujarat to protect victims and witnesses and more will be sentenced.

The Gujarat riots are to many of us the worst blot on India since the 1984 Sikh riots. These were my fellow Indians butchered by their own countrymen because of religious hatred. The argument of who started it is irrelevant because those who died were innocent victims. The Indian state failed them. No excuses ! No sane person is going to defend the rioters. They deserve no mercy. Rioters choose to riot, the victims are not given that choice.

However a ridiculous article like this does not make matters better, it actually does the opposite. The Falsehoods are easily pointed out and used to tarnish the entire attempt to bring those perpetrators to justice.

There was a photograph of a young Muslim tailor begging for his life with folded hands. Few images that i have ever seen has seared my heart more than that. I wept then and it still has the power to occasionally moisten my eyes.

This was a horror perpetrated on India by Indians and only we can bring the perpetrators to justice thereby at least partly atoning for having collectively failed our countrymen and women.
