India's judicial system slow, corrupt: Report

    Friday, 04 May 2007

NEW DELHI, May 4 (APP): India's corrupt judicial system is a hindrance to effective counter-terrorism measures, The
Times of India said on Friday citing a latest US report on global terrorism.

In its annual report on terrorism, US has taken a hefty swipe at the Indian judicial system, calling it "prone to corruption" and "slow" which hampered India's counter-terrorism efforts, the paper says.

The report, released on April 30, said: "India's counter-terrorism efforts were hampered by its outdated and
overburdened law enforcement and legal systems. The Indian court system was slow, laborious, and prone to corruption; terrorism trials can take years to complete."

It is not just Indian judiciary which has caught US attention. The report has also highlighted shortcomings in policing. It said, "Many of India's local police forces were poorly staffed and trained, says the daily.

oh oh.......prone to corruption. Atleast we have one which is running and somethingon which the mass still has trust on. Unlike a lot of other countries where judiciary is a mockery.

It is slow, True. Corrupt Government has to do something; maybe increase the number of courts, judges etc. Justice Delayed is Justice Denied

New Delhi: The Centre has asked the states to take steps to start the shift system in courts, the Lok Sabha was informed on Friday.

The decision to set up evening/morning courts, wherever feasible, was taken at a conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts held here on April 8, Law Minister H R Bhardwaj said in reply to questions.

The conference had decided that appropriate cases including those involving petty offences be transfered to such courts, he said.

Either retired judicial officers be re-employed or serving judicial officers be given suitable incentive to preside over these courts, he said citing the decision of the conference.

Government has requested the state governments to take action on the decision, as also other recommendations made at the conference, in consultation with their respective High Courts, Bhardwaj said.

The government has also requested the Chief Justices of the High Courts to take action in consultation with the state governments, he said. Replying to another question, he said the posts of three judges in the Supreme Court are vacant. In High Courts across the country, 91 posts are lying vacant.
